Golden Valley running back KJ Maduike ran for two touchdowns and more than 300 yards as Golden Valley improved its playoff resume with a 49-28 win over West Ranch at Valencia High School on Friday.

The Grizzlies (6-4 overall, 2-3 in the Foothill League) opened the scoring within the first three minutes of the game with quarterback Josh Valano hitting Ray Ibrahim on a 5-yard touchdown pass. The play came after Maduike broke free for a run of nearly 70 yards.

West Ranch tied the game late in the quarter when Eget found Jared Staub on a 15-yard touchdown pass.

Maduike opened the second quarter by scoring on a 5-yard run for Golden Valley to earn a 14-7 lead.

Halfway through the second quarter, West Ranch appeared to tie the game with Eget throwing a 30-yard pass into the end zone. Officials ruled the receiver caught the ball out of bounds.

Following an interception two plays later, Golden Valley marched down the field and scored on another Valano-to-Ibrahim pass.

Golden Valley led 21-7 at halftime. Early in the third, Eget went back to Staub for a 26-yard touchdown.

The Wildcats had no answer for Golden Valley’s running game. Fullback Bubba Daire and Tai Brown each scored rushing touchdowns in the second half. Gabe Garcia, who helped fill in for West Ranch’s leading rusher Jake Rice, who was out with a broken collarbone, also had a rushing touchdown.

West Ranch closed the gap to 35-28 with four minutes to play in the game when Eget converted a fourth down pass to Ryan Camacho in heavy traffic. But Maduike added two more touchdowns, including one from 47 yards out, in the final minutes.

The Grizzlies are hoping for an at-large berth to the CIF-Southern Section Division 7 playoffs.
