Editor's Note: The final Valentine's Day submissions for the month are published in this Sunday's Our Community section.

I know a lad who’s all forlorn

because his heart is sadly torn

He likes a girl that’s really sweet

But she thinks he’s a real deadbeat

This poor slob cannot see the truth

Not even when he’s shown the proof

She just can’t stand the stupid bum

And doesn’t want to be his chum

He thinks he has the problem solved

And he’s become now quite resolved

He’ll woo her till her heart he breaks

And win he will what ere it takes

That special day is very near

A day when lovers shed a tear

The perfect time to plight his troth

And get that girl with no more sloth

So now our friend is in full flight

He’s buying gifts to make her bite

But she’s not ready yet to melt

She thinks of him as just a smelt

It’s coming down to just one trick

To win her love and get her quick

He’s really now a frothing fool

But acts the part of suave, Joe cool

He sends to her a lovely card

It’s worthy of the vaunted bard

Hearts and flowers and mushy stuff

If this don’t work she’s made of fluff

Alas our hero’s not to win

She still can’t bear the sight of him

Oh the sting of mute rejection

Weeping in his lone dejection

But wait, there is a moral here

Let every man hear loud and clear

Before you choose your bride to be

Look to yourself the truth to see

Improve yourself if need you must,

And do not stint, your life adjust

Become the man she’ll want to see

Then live your lives most happily.
