Devon Ingber, 16, a sophomore at Valencia High School, won Reserve Champion in the Junior Varsity Equitation division in December, competing against 58 girls from both public and private schools from all over Southern California, on her horse Fabiane.

The junior varsity division is characterized by jumps set at the three-foot height. Equitation is the division where judging is based solely on the rider's performance, not the horse's ability.

Currently, over 67 schools are represented in the Interscholastic Equestrian League (IEL), with 272 riders who competed at the Dec. 8 show. Junior Varsity is the largest division.

The Interscholastic Equestrian League hosts four shows per year, and riders accumulate points for year-end awards. The results are watched closely by college equestrian teams.

Equestrian is one of the fastest growing National Collegiate Athletic Association sports, with Division 1 and 2 teams offering scholarships for competitors.

Devon has expressed her desire to ride for a division one team such as Texas Christian University or Baylor University.

She rides in Sand Canyon for seasoned and well-respected trainer Carolyn Culligan, who is having quite a winning season herself. In addition to Devon, she took local, younger equestrian Caitlyn Lovingfoss from Legacy Christian Academy to the National Finals in Kentucky over the summer, where Kaitlyn placed 7th on her pony, Salt Water Taffy.

Devon had a stellar year on Fabiane, as well, winning her hunter division at the Flintridge Memorial show in April, and then the Equitation division there at the Autumn Classic in the fall. In November, she won the LA Hunter/Jumper Association Horsemanship Medal at the National Preview Horse Show. And she took 2nd and 3rd place ribbons at the very large, regional show "Blenheim Classic" in June in San Juan Capistrano.

Devon has been with her horses for less than a year, so the 2013-2014 IEL season looks very bright for this young rider!
