UPDATE: SCV Deputies arrest graffiti suspect

A young man suspected of committing 160 acts of graffiti vandalism was booked Monday at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance, officials said.

The arrest came just two days after detectives asked for the public’s help in identifying a vandal who allegedly caused more than $40,000 in damage.

The request was issued Saturday, but it was a patrol deputy who stopped a young man in Newhall that day who recognized the man’s resemblance to the suspect, Deputy Josh Dubin said Monday.

Detectives working in the station’s anti-gang detail began investigating the young man for a “potential involvement in the incidents of graffiti,” Dubin said.

On Monday, they served a search warrant at the residence of Nicolas Palma, 19, of Newhall, who was booked at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance.

“Through the investigation, detectives reportedly uncovered additional information and evidence believed to be connected to many of the recent incidents of vandalism,” Dubin said. “Mr. Palma is alleged to have committed in excess of $40,000 worth of graffiti-related vandalism.”

Detectives are expected to submit information to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for filing consideration, he said.

Palma is being held in custody with bail set at $10,000.

He is scheduled to appear in San Fernando Superior Court on Tuesday.

Yep, he's a druggie. Glad they got him. Keep rotating this turd in and out of county jail, pretty soon he will get some meaningful prison time.

Bdeezine: Posted: March 18, 2013 6:15 p.m.

Nice catch, Sheriffs.

WRexHole: Posted: March 18, 2013 7:05 p.m.

He can't make $10k bail? I guess mommie is glad for the free babysitting.

Code4: Posted: March 18, 2013 7:09 p.m.

This will be filed as a misdemeanor. No jail time.

Mropinion: Posted: March 18, 2013 7:27 p.m.

I just hope he gets more punishment than any one of us would get for a rolling stop through an intersection that has great visability in both directions.

lovelife: Posted: March 18, 2013 8:05 p.m.

@Code4 - "This will be filed as a misdemeanor. No jail time"

Wow... If what you said is true, which I have NO reason to doubt, it proves, once again, that our system is an absolute joke! What message will be sent to other dirtbags out there ??? They won't be scared off, they'll laugh at the system like everyone else does.

However, I do think that the drugs will give him more than a slap on the hand. True, it probably won't be much time, but I do think there will be "some" jail time. I guess it also depends on his record. I can't possibly imagine it will be a clean one!

lovelife: Posted: March 18, 2013 8:10 p.m.

Btw, I am aware that it IS a controlled substance that he was in possession of... Many people don't realize that "controlled" can be illegal...

Controlled substances = are substances that are the subject of legislative control. This may include illegal drugs and prescription medications.

ohhyaa: Posted: March 18, 2013 8:16 p.m.

And another one bites the dust. Way-to-go SCV Duties!

RatmanG: Posted: March 18, 2013 9:20 p.m.

I have seen this guys exact tag, on a toilet seat at a local eating establishment. No joke....

ohhyaa: Posted: March 18, 2013 9:26 p.m.

@RatmanG, classic.

ricketzz: Posted: March 19, 2013 8:46 a.m.

You go to the toilet in public bathrooms? Ick.

sportzjunky: Posted: March 19, 2013 9:07 a.m.

if he has no priors, this kid will get 90days for the drugs(and do 9 days), and each vandalism charge carries time.. he'll serve time for those, but unfortunately he will do 10% of what the give him as detainment.Lets hope he can get off dope during his short stint, or it will be a revolving door of jail and time on the streets for a long time....

MoveAwayPlease: Posted: March 19, 2013 9:49 a.m.

Im shocked our overwieght sheriff's could catch anything but a lunch break? Why dont we spray paint the kid. Then have him walk around for a week with the paint on?

chefgirl358: Posted: March 19, 2013 9:54 a.m.

This idiot won't be in jail more than a few days tops. He'll be ordered to pay restitution, for which he has no revenue to pay so it won't matter, and he'll be placed on informal probation - which is just all talk because that means he has no actual probation officer assigned to him that he's accountable to, and even if he DID have one under formal probation, with realignment - he couldn't be sent back to jail for violating anyway! Our system really sucks right now, especially in LA County. If you want to commit a crime that isn't federal, do it now, because you really won't have consequences that impact you much.

lars: Posted: March 19, 2013 11:13 a.m.

chefgirl, that only applies if your a criminal.
The perp caused $40,000 worth of damage because of his actions.
He will pay no fine, and probably serve no time in jail (first offense).

Meanwhile, if a taxpayer drives with a taillight bulb out, expect to pay $100-$200 for that offense!

ohhyaa: Posted: March 19, 2013 12:14 p.m.

I think MoveAwayPlease has suggested the best punishment... spray paint the kid and leave it on him for a week. Sorry if that seems cruel, but the kid will live and hopefully learn a lesson.

whataplace: Posted: March 19, 2013 12:25 p.m.

For a drug charge with no priors he will be given a drug treatment program and when he finishes it he will have those charges dropped. He may even be able to rat out some drug dealers and get everything dropped.

As for the tagging charges, they will have to prove that each of the tags using a word used commonly by taggers is his. I bet a plea deal of a misdemeanor with community service (hopefully cleaning up tagging) and maybe some restitution payable over time. Not $40,000.00 that is just a way exaggerated made up amount I bet.

chefgirl358: Posted: March 19, 2013 1:42 p.m.

ohhyaa...Ditto with moveawayplease. I don't think it's cruel at all, that's the only way these vandals will discover how crappy it is to see something vandalized.

mangoman: Posted: March 19, 2013 10:57 p.m.

This Idiot "POS" should get an old fashion beat down from the Tan & green folks........ make Baca proud before he leaves office!!!!

sportzjunky: Posted: March 20, 2013 8:18 a.m.

pretty sure they dont offer diversion until a third arrest thats non-violent or sales related... if you have 3 felony petitions is usually the point you spend 30 in the clink to clean up then drug diversion for 6 months in patient.. oh, by the way, that would be on our dime.

whataplace: Posted: March 20, 2013 5:33 p.m.

For first offense drug charges they get drug program and clean record if successfully complete.
