McKeon releases statement on missile interceptors

Updated: March 15, 2013 1:41 p.m.

WASHINGTON- Rep. Howard P. “Buck” McKeon (R-CA), Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee today commented on the decision to place fourteen new missile defense interceptors in Alaska. Four years ago, the Administration determined that the missile threat from countries like North Korea had changed and, parting with established policy, decided to eliminate missiles from the proposed inventory and 'mothball' the missile filed built to house them.  At the time, House Republicans disputed the change in the threat and pressed the Administration not to alter the missile defense strategy or close down vital infrastructure. In testimony before the House, General O’Reilly, then head of the Missile Defense Agency, testified that reactivating “mothballed” silos would cost the taxpayer $200 million.

Reacting to the White House decision, Chairman McKeon said:

“While I am pleased that the Administration is taking this step, given the growth of the ICBM threat, I am disappointed that this is an announcement that has to be made at all.  The original decision to divest ourselves of these interceptors was a classic case of looking at threats through politically tinted glasses.  Now that the Administration has decided to see clearly, America can get back on the right course; but at a high and unnecessary cost.  Hundreds of millions will need to be spent to bring our infrastructure back on line at a time when defense resources are already scarce and our ability to defend against ICBM attack has been needlessly delayed.  And, yet again, we have changed paths on our allies, who have backed our policies at great political and military risk.  As the administration continues to set their missile defense policy they should be mindful of the high cost of placing political expediency above national security.”

Well, chalk up another one for Obama. He seems to be shortsighted in everything from healthcare (no your premiums will go down and you can see the same doctor's) to the military.

Everything he touches he messes up and costs us money. Thank God that he can't run for another term.

sreilly11: Posted: March 15, 2013 5:44 p.m.

whataplace - sorry to inform you, been hearing chatter about a Michelle/Hilary run in 2016. Fox running the story today. Could she do it? Don't ask me, I was totally convinced at the last election that voters had figured things out.........to believe they will finally get it over the course of the next 4 years.......not getting any warm fuzzy feelings.

God help us USSR here we come!!!!!

XeroBeef: Posted: March 15, 2013 6:27 p.m.

Both parties are outdated dinosaurs.
We no longer should be held under a representational democracy. Technology has allowed us the ability to move to a direct democracy.

The parties are two sides of the same coin actually financed and schooled by a De-facto ruling plutocracy.

The parties are surely relics of the past, for a real change we will need to change the system that supports this slavery to the past.

ohhyaa: Posted: March 15, 2013 6:52 p.m.

@sreilly11 Help us all if Michelle is elected President. Honestly I'd rather vote for Dennis Rodman. He and Kimmy Jong Un already boozed it up and watched some B-Ball together. Mr. Rodman and the chubby cheeked 29 year old leader of North Korea are most certainly "friends for life". Perhaps they could exchange piercing rings and get BFF tattoos.

Since the missile intercepters aren't expected to be in place until 2017, Dennis can serve as our decoy. Whatever we do I strongly urge that we DO NOT send Michelle over to meet with the impish leader. I predict that she won't even be over the Sea of Japan before the nukes started flying in our direction.

One can only hope that Jong Un is bluffing. Maybe we could offer to give him an IPod and build him a casino to keep himself busy. If not, he still has his galland white Unicorn that he can prance around on. God help us all.

sreilly11: Posted: March 15, 2013 7:04 p.m.

ohhyaa - The solution to the problem......send Rodman back over in his wedding dress!!! Korea just might be forever in our debt.

ohhyaa: Posted: March 15, 2013 7:54 p.m.

ewwwwww. I remember that!!! Such a sick visual. I'm going to poke out my eyes and gargle bleach. Well, while I do that, I think you might be on to something. I sure hope they don't hook-up and become Boy Evil and Gigantic Me. Maybe Dennis could convince the little troll to sell us N. Korea for one-bilian dollars.

What Buck failed to remember in his selective amnesia was that it was officials from the Pentagon that recommended scraping the missile defense program which, by the way, has a defective guidance system and they don't work. But not to worry since the North Korean ICBMs, if they even exist, don't work, either...

BBennetts: Posted: March 15, 2013 10:06 p.m.

I will bet Buck is happy. I bet the contractors involved in this will donate big to his campaign fund. This is the same fund that he pays his wife a handsome six figure salary out of for filing his monthly form (the highest salary paid to any campaign treasurer in all of congress). It's almost like putting donations in your own pocket.

@castaicjack

So you're saying BHO is again wasting more money? At least in this instance it's only hundreds of millions of dollars.

lovelife: Posted: March 15, 2013 11:35 p.m.

@Sreilly - "Been hearing chatter about a Michelle/Hilary run in 2016"

You and I have personally discussed this before. You know that I asked to be shot by an AK-47 to make sure I'm dead if this team wins in 2016. Being that I have so many enemies here at this site, I will pick Stevie to have the honors and plaster me with bullets. I know he won't miss because he knows that would be the ONLY way to permanently shut me up! My second pick is DM... He reneged on his BBQ so he couldn't poison me; so, if Stevie can't make it, or just can't do it, DM's my next pick! :)

"What Buck failed to remember in his selective amnesia was that it was officials from the Pentagon that recommended scraping the missile defense program which, by the way, has a defective guidance system and they don't work."

CastaicJack, you don't know what the eff you're talking about. Early tests of the SM-3 resulted in failure but "since 2002, a total of 19 SM-3 missiles have been fired in 16 different test events resulting in 16 intercepts against threat-representative full-size and more challenging subscale unitary and full-size targets with separating warheads. In addition, a modified Aegis BMD/SM-3 system successfully destroyed a malfunctioning U.S. satellite by hitting the satellite in the right spot to negate the hazardous fuel tank at the highest closure rate of any ballistic missile defense technology ever attempted."

The SM-3 is capable of intercepting any ICBM North Korea cares to launch. We COULD have a shield capable of completely defending America against any and all missile attacks if the DEMOCRATS hadn't re-directed the funding to the welfare dependents that vote for them.

sreilly11: Posted: March 16, 2013 3:41 a.m.

@lovelife - I'm going to give DM the benefit of the doubt because something could have just come up that required his attention.........same happened to me..........cake never got made, spent my time praying for Vtown's silly A$$......lol

ricketzz: Posted: March 16, 2013 9:50 a.m.

The PRK is not going to attack anyone. This bluster is all for domestic consumption. The Peoples Army knows any attack on the USA will be answered 100:1. We are supposed to be strong enough to sustain the first blow and then reply with Hellish retribution. That's what having a deterrent means.

Rep. McKeon says politics should not be a factor, then complains this will make some "allies'" domestic politics awkward. God forbid we embarrass the Polish PM.

The biggest existential threat to the USA is not a tinpot dictator; it is Global Warming. All this North Korean and terrorist menace talk is misdirection; the sooner we face up to Climate Change the better our chances at surviving. Quit fighting the last war.

lovelife: Posted: March 16, 2013 12:15 p.m.

@Rocketeer - "A modified Aegis BMD/SM-3 system successfully destroyed a malfunctioning U.S. satellite by hitting the satellite in the right spot"

You are absolutely correct! AND you might have added that the US Navy Destroyer did this successfully in the choppy waters of the Pacific Ocean! Talk about accuracy! On top of that, they had a very short "window of opportunity" while the satellite passed over. The goal of that mission was to prevent the fuel tank from reaching Earth and spilling its hazardous contents in a populous area. They did that with precision!

@sreilly - "I'm going to give DM the benefit of the doubt because something could have just come up that required his attention"

Yes, I'm sure he's a very busy man! So sorry to hear that the cake never got made, but you cracked me up while praying for that very confused poster, Vtown ... :)

castaicjack: Posted: March 16, 2013 9:23 p.m.

The missile system in question did poorly in tests and has a known problem in its guidance system:

DMeyer: Posted: March 16, 2013 9:57 p.m.

@castaicjack

Yes we know, BHO is wasting hundreds of millions of dollars, add it to the trillions of debt he has accumulated. Thank you.

castaicjack: Posted: March 16, 2013 10:22 p.m.

DMeyer: Don't forget to subtract the trillions in debt accumulated under dubya, not to mention a war in Iraq that was totally unnecessary...

Rocketeer: Posted: March 17, 2013 12:53 a.m.

@CastaicJack: Perhaps you should actually read the article for which you posted a link.

"Asked about the "very poor test performance" of the interceptor the US plans to deploy in Alaska and whether he has confidence it would be certain to shoot down a North Korean missile, Hagel acknowledged "there was an issue regarding our gyro guidance system".

He said that the deployment would not go ahead until "we are sure we have the complete confidence that we need". But he insisted that he had confidence in the weapon. "But the American people should be assured that our interceptors are effective," he said."

There WAS (past tense) a gyro problem that was fixed by 2001 and the SM-3 has 16 kills in 16 tests since.

The War In Iraq was necessary- Bush followed the sound doctrine of moving the battlefield from the US to the Middle East. More convenient for the jihadists and instead of civilians they fought armed, armored, and highly trained US troops. And it worked- no Benghazis on Bush's watch. Also, at $784B the war cost was about HALF of the $1.3T deficit Obama has run every year he's been in office.

Bush certainly wasn't as fiscally responsible as he should have been. But his deficits were $500B every year until the Dems took the House and the Senate at which point they doubled to $1T. Then once Obama got in and they ruled everything the deficit went up to $1.8T the first year and $1.65T the second.

Obama increased the debt by more in his first three years in office than Bush did in eight.

DMeyer: Posted: March 17, 2013 12:18 p.m.

@castaicjack

Dubya did rack up a lot of debt, I remember BHO called that amount of debt "unpatriotic", you remember too don't you?

http://useconomy.about.com/od/usdebtanddeficit/p/US-Debt-by-President.htm

But the amount of debt racked up by Dubya is nothing compared to the amount BHO already has done and will do. Thanks again for pointing out that BHO is spending us into oblivion.

And since you say this missle interceptor program won't work you are in essence saying that BHO is now wasting hundreds of millions more. And still you just keeping sipping on that kool aid. You may want to put that glass down, your judgement is clouded.

castaicjack: Posted: March 17, 2013 12:21 p.m.

The latest info indicates the guidance malfunction "may" be fixed but needs further testing to confirm it and that has yet to happen:
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-01-18/raytheon-missile-defense-flaw-may-be-fixed-tester-says.html
As far as the Bush vs Obama spending 8 years vs 4 years, you're citing a debunked claim that has circulated the internet for years. Here's a fact check:
http://www.forbes.com/sites/rickungar/2012/05/24/who-is-the-smallest-government-spender-since-eisenhower-would-you-believe-its-barack-obama/
And, er ah, Iraq was invaded under the false pretense of imaginary weapons of mass destruction and not for any of the reasons you mentioned. Keep think the way you do and lose more elections...

castaicjack: Posted: March 17, 2013 12:43 p.m.

Oh and a bit more on the spending and where it came from. Hint: from the previous guy you put in office:
http://www.factcheck.org/2012/06/obamas-spending-inferno-or-not/
And as far as no Benghazi's under Bush's watch, you're right. We only had 9/11...

sreilly11: Posted: March 17, 2013 1:32 p.m.

castaicjack: Oh please you want to compare 9/11 to Benghazi? Bush didn't try to conceal and he certainly didn't sit on his A$$ and do nothing as is the case of BHO.

castaicjack: Posted: March 17, 2013 2:39 p.m.

sreilly11,
Oh please, Bush sat on his butt on the day of 9/11 in a schoolhouse, dumbfounded, and unable to comprehend what was going on around him. And then, what did he do?
He invaded the wrong country!

DMeyer: Posted: March 17, 2013 6:47 p.m.

"Oh and a bit more on the spending and where it came from. Hint: from the previous guy you put in office: "

Uh, I voted for Obama the first time, he told us he would cut the deficit in half, he promised to close Gitmo, he promised to end cap and trade, he promised to get rid of lobbyists, he promised to have all employers enroll their employees in 401(k),IRA plans, he promised to do immigration reform,....and a whole bunch of other promises he absolutely failed at keeping.

Unlike a blind kool aid drinker I will fire, or try and fire an incompetent imbecile. It's obvious that Obama is in over his head, the thing is that in spite of his absolute failure of a presidency he talks a good game. The lame will fall for it, those who demand results will not. You keep falling for empty promises and ever increasing debt. Some of us have more sense than to keep falling for that bit.

The funny thing is that you really believe that the missle system doesn't work or won't work, thus you must recognize that Obama is wasting hundreds of millions of dollars by bringing it back online and yet you have no criticism of him. Ah, the wisdom of a hopelessly devoted liberal.

sreilly11: Posted: March 17, 2013 9:08 p.m.

Castaicjack: What were your first thoughts when the first plane hit the building......don't lie now, just like the rest of this country we all thought it was an accident. When the second plane hit, we all knew our lives had changed forever. Yes, it took maybe an hour to set in exactly what we were up against..........IT'S BEEN MONTHS SINCE BENGHAZI!!!! What has BHO done......not a thing except his usual, point fingers......remember the movie producer......

Security has been beefed-up on American installations abroad but in unstable middle eastern countries any of them can probably still be attacked just like the time when the marine barracks were wiped out in Lebanon when Reagan was president...

sreilly11: Posted: March 18, 2013 2:48 a.m.

castaicjack: "Security has been beefed-up on American installations abroad but in unstable middle eastern countries any of them can probably still be attacked just like the time when the marine barracks were wiped out in Lebanon when Reagan was president"... Well of course he did, now the whole world is watching. I'm not saying what happen in Benghazi couldn't happen under the watch of another President, minus the finger pointing, blame game and lies told by this administration. Bush put the book down......BHO is still stuck on Chapter 1, page 1, okay page 2, since he had security beefed up.

whataplace: Posted: March 18, 2013 10:40 a.m.

Gee, maybe BHO should get another Nobel Peace Prize? The europeans giving him this award shows exactly why Europe is where they are today. No brains.
No discernment. Unfortunatly many in our country are the same way, that is why we are where we are today.

Watch out if the amnesty that BHO is pushing for illegals passes then the illegals will be voting your tax dollars into their pockets and we really will have lost the country just like Europe.

stevehw: Posted: March 18, 2013 3:52 p.m.

Spoken like someone who has never actually *been* to Europe...
