One arrested, 10 cited in DUI checkpoint

The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station conducted a DUI/Driver’s License checkpoint on March 14, 2013 from 1800 to 0200 hours as part of the city of Santa Clarita’s commitment to traffic safety.  This checkpoint was one of many that have been or will be conducted throughout the year in Santa Clarita. The location of Thursday’s checkpoint was on Newhall Ranch Road @ Grandview Drive.

DUI Checkpoints along with regularly scheduled high visibility DUI enforcement serves as a proven deterrent with the goal of removing alcohol and drugged impaired drivers and heightening awareness of the dangers of driving under the influence.

[1206] Vehicles were screened.

[3] Drivers were given field sobriety tests.

[1] Drivers were arrested for DUI.

[16] Unlicensed and/or suspended/revoked drivers were sent to court.

[10] Drivers were cited and sent to court for various Vehicle Code violations.

[9] Vehicles were towed, three with 30-day impound holds.

“Over the course of the past five years, DUI collisions have claimed 11 lives and resulted in 255 injury crashes harming 363 of our friends and neighbors,” said Sergeant Cohen. “If everyone planned ahead for a sober non-drinking designated drivers these numbers could be lowered to Zero.

Those arrested and convicted for DUI can expect jail time, vehicle storage or impound fees, license suspension, fines, fees, DUI classes, insurance rates will increase and other expenses that can push the cost of an arrest to over $10,000; not to mention the embarrassment they’ll face around family, friends & co-workers.

Please keep our streets and highways safer every day of the week: Report Drunk Drivers – Call 911! Funding for this and other DUI operations are from a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

So I guess the other 7, who had no license or it was suspended, got to drive away in their car. Charlie Beck must be helping LASD now.

Bdeezine: Posted: March 15, 2013 1:02 p.m.

More overtime money flushed down the drain and into the pockets of law enforcement. One big arrest. Big whoopee. According to the Signal's own crime reports, TEN DUI/drug arrests were made yesterday from patrols. No question which method is more efficient.

Baddog1: Posted: March 15, 2013 1:32 p.m.

Anyone have any idea how much revenue was generated from this?

ohhyaa: Posted: March 15, 2013 1:50 p.m.

I don't care how much this checkpoint cost. We're wasting two million on a roundabout and getting nothing but a traffic nightmare, when this DUI checkpoint actually got a drunk off of our roads. Since I live near this neighborhood I say THANK YOU to law enforcement. Glad this idiot didn't kill any of my kids, one of them was right around that area last night. And to the 16 who chose to drive with a suspended or revoked license (probably from driving drunk) boo hoo.

itzreality: Posted: March 15, 2013 1:52 p.m.

So they only arrested one person on a DUI! This arrest saved someone's life or prevented someone from serious injury! Not money flushed down the because you could have been the one person that was saved!~

Having been hit by a drunk driver many years ago, I have the scars, three surgeries and reminders everyday! Meanwhile if there were DUI check points maybe I would have not been maned for life!

Start looking at the human aspect not the dollars because the next arrest could prevent you from suffering as I and many others have to cope with everyday!!!!!

NotSoAwesomeTown: Posted: March 15, 2013 2:19 p.m.

I agree with you, ohhyaa & itzreality. These checkpoints are funded by NHTSA grants, usually a "use it or lose it" grant. I would like to know what overtime, if any, is paid out during these checkpoints, or if it all comes from the grant monies. Half the staff were Explorers who are DONATING their time as volunteers assisting the Deputies.

sreilly11: Posted: March 15, 2013 2:23 p.m.

I know that there are several out there that have been victims in DUI accidents........question??? When did your accidents happen......during the day, at night, middle of the week, weekend????

Bdeezine: Posted: March 15, 2013 2:27 p.m.

itzreality: Now just imagine that same group of cops patrolling for 10 hours instead of hanging out on Newhall Ranch Road. Bet they'd catch more than one. Just look at the daily crime reports on here if you don't believe me.

Baddog1: Posted: March 15, 2013 2:55 p.m.

I was asking how much income may have been generated, not how much it cost to run.

lovelife: Posted: March 15, 2013 2:55 p.m.

Who cares which method of capturing DUI drivers is more effective ??? This government wastes so much money, even while handing it out to countries who hate us, so why penny pinch over safety??? I do agree with others who promote daytime patrols - but, the checkpoints are deemed necessary. Like itzreality said, this arrest saved someone's life. How 'bout this checkpoint saved an entire families life ??? To ALL you penny pinchers out there, "It could have been your own family!"

Code4: Posted: March 15, 2013 3:03 p.m.

Baddog1: Police agencies don't generate income. So what is your question? The revenue is for the impound yard for the 9 cars. The revenue is for the courts, that are closing courts so I guess negative revenue for them.

Bdeezine: Posted: March 15, 2013 3:05 p.m.

By the same philosophy, why penny-pinch over supplying innoculations for school children? Why penny-pinch about offering government-funded school lunches for poverty stricken families? You same people complain that there's no money left in the budget and we need to cut spending.... the very same people that are OK with blowing money on things like this. You talk out of both sides of your mouth. Which way do you want it?

Bdeezine: Posted: March 15, 2013 3:13 p.m.

Baddog1: I would assume that they handed out about 35 tickets in total. Tickets now are all at least $200 to $500. So even lowballing the numbers, I would say they generated about $7000 or more, not including impounding charges.

lovelife: Posted: March 15, 2013 3:24 p.m.

Well, many of us know that MANY people here speak just like BHO does. He talks about cutting the budget and yet he increased it beyond what the human eyes can read in digits... So, like I've said before, the same thing that comes out of BHOs mouth, is the same thing that comes out of his A$$ !!!

Why cut off the tours of the White House when it's OK for Michelle to travel to Colorado and snow ski, while the bimbo plays gulf with Tiger ??? I don't have answers why this asinine government does what it does, but let them pour tons into public safety and keep us ALL safe! Isn't that a good thing Bdeezine ??? After all, how else would we be able to 'yell' at each other here on the different threads ???

stevehw: Posted: March 15, 2013 3:33 p.m.

Pretty sure taxpayer money isn't paying for ski trips and greens fees... --edited.

sreilly11: Posted: March 15, 2013 4:10 p.m.

@lovelife: Why cut off the tours of the White House.....

BHO loves to play the "Blame Game"....it starts with blaming the Secret Service for budget cuts, which of course we all know, he was really blaming Republicans for his budget issues.

In my book this is just a ploy to further his goals to limit American's access to the White House. To bad somebody doesn't change the locks when he is on one of his many vacations.......he is the one that needs to be locked out of the White House....not some students trying to learn about their Government........(another plan of his, control what they learn)!

lovelife: Posted: March 15, 2013 5:00 p.m.

@sreilly - "it starts with blaming the Secret Service for budget cuts"

How sad that the blamer-in-chief, liar-in-chief, manipulator-in-chief, and deceiver-in-chief, cannot and will not face the American people and start accepting FAULT. Never in the 20th Century did ANY president EVER blame everything, and everybody else for a failed Administration !!! Even Reagan NEVER stooped so low to blame Jimmy "peanut farmer" Carter for HIS entire Administration failures! And, there were PLENTY of failures! That same inept peanut Bozo back then couldn't do ONE thing right. Thank God, Americans were smart back then and threw him out after his first term! But, obviously American's intellect has dropped substantially into this new Century.

I always find a way to forgive people who didn't know about BHO during the first election, but I don't forgive them for being so stupid while re-electing him again! This power grabbing dip, is nothing to look up to. I feel so sorry for the military under him. We are ALL aware that many people are disgusted with his foreign policies, including Panetta who just resigned, Hillary resigning for her own reasons (but you can bet it's because of BHO and his ridiculous policies and the embarrassment of Benghazi) and Generals speaking out against him; thus, losing their command because BHO fires them, etc... What a mess this Administration is !!! But yet, this Bozo still gets in front of the cameras and blames EVERYBODY and EVERYTHING for his failures... Unbelievable !!!

Baddog1: Posted: March 15, 2013 5:09 p.m.

Do the fines for Impound, Citations, and such go to the State, County, City or all of the above? and what type of percentages? I'm just asking if any one here knows.

whataplace: Posted: March 15, 2013 5:29 p.m.

I would hope that our tax money is being used for the most effective policing of drunk drivers. This would not be the checkpoints though.
We may have gotten the same drunk and 3 others as well. This would not be the check points though if the more effective methods were employed.
So yes, effectiveness does matter. If you really want drunks off the streets you would stop supporting checkpoints.

Have a safe weekend everyone.

tpaul: Posted: March 15, 2013 5:36 p.m.

I was at home drinking beer watching the LA Kings lose a close one.

stevehw: Posted: March 15, 2013 6:04 p.m.

Some people must not know how government works...we hear this time and time again, whenever any president or his family aren't caged inside the White House.

As anyone with any experience knows, *personal expenses are paid for by the employee* (which includes the president and his family). The government doesn't pay for ski lessons, it doesn't pay for meals, it doesn't pay for golf balls or greens fees, etc.

What *is* paid for is the security apparatus that is required to be present whether they're on a ranch in Texas, at someone's home in Martha's Vineyard, on a ski trip, in Hawaii, in Upper Mongolia, at home in San Clemente, *wherever*.

Funny how the right wing never complains about this when a republican is in office, nor the left when a democrat is in office. Bottom line...it's a STUPID issue because it's a NON-ISSUE which people want to turn into one.

stevehw: Posted: March 15, 2013 6:07 p.m.

BTW...what *earth* do checkpoints have to do with Obama?

Answer: Nothing at all.

boneshark: Posted: March 15, 2013 6:48 p.m.

So they screened 1,206 vehicles and were able to catch ONE suspect for DUI. So for the stated purpose of the check point (to catch people drinking and driving), that's a batting average of .000829! Pathetic!!! And so they catch a few other folks for other various infractions...whoopy! Now how about the over 1,100 other law abiding citizens that had to go through this non-sense. To be stopped and questioned for nothing more than travelling down the street. Sounds more and more like "PAPERS PLEASE!"

Geezer: Posted: March 15, 2013 7:22 p.m.

[9] Vehicles were towed, three with 30-day impound holds.
So this means 6 were illegal aliens and only citizens had their car impounded.

Geezer: Posted: March 15, 2013 7:27 p.m.

What time zone is being used for the time stamps on these comments?

lovelife: Posted: March 15, 2013 7:38 p.m.

"Some people must not know how government works"

Well Stevie, using YOUR words, I'll explain... fyi, if you ever spent any time in the military, you would know that when you are a VIP, you get a bunch of free perks - and yes, that means free meals while traveling. Do you think that BHO is charged for meals when he's on the golf course ??? Think real hard Stevie...

One - OUR tax dollars gives them (Obamas) very generous amounts of $$$$$$ to pay for ALL the things that YOU just don't seem to understand about government "select" employees.

BHO = $50,000 YEARLY in UN-taxed income (personal account) ADDED to his taxed $400,k wasted salary every year. Let's do the math... 4yrs in office @ $50,k UNTAXED = $200k UNTAXED money in 4 years ... Plus there is more for the remaining time of his wasted term in office. What do you REALLY think the president is charged for ??? Answer: NOTHING - It's called "on the house" - He might pay for a "round of beers" at the country club at the golf course, but don't think it's gonna leave him penny-less.

Michelle Obama receives $10,000 from a trust set up for first ladies, who don't draw a salary. The fund was set up to augment presidential salaries.

Again, do YOU really think she pays for anything ???

lovelife: Posted: March 15, 2013 7:40 p.m.

Eastern

DMeyer: Posted: March 15, 2013 9:44 p.m.

One thing to keep in mind, the only people losing money at the checkpoints are those that are breaking the law. Court costs, fines, impound fees, tickets, lawyers bills are all part of how we punish those law breakers.

Those complying with the law and the rules of the road have nothing to worry about, those that are not deserve to get slapped.

Code4: Posted: March 15, 2013 10:26 p.m.

"Do the fines for Impound, Citations, and such go to the State, County, City or all of the above? and what type of percentages? I'm just asking if any one here knows."

The impound fees go directly to the tow yard. Most of the cite money goes to the state. The extra fees that are tacked on go to court costs and small portion to the City or County depending on where the check point is.

lovelife: Posted: March 15, 2013 11:50 p.m.

You're right... We need more daytime patrols...

http://www.rr.com/video/2345407223

stevehw: Posted: March 16, 2013 12:42 a.m.

Maybe ll needs a lesson in what is paid for by government employees and what isn't...

"Golf getaways are part of presidential tradition. Dwight Eisenhower, the 34th U.S. president, was such an avid golfer that he had a putting green installed on the White House lawn and was elected to the World Golf Hall of Fame. Former President George H.W. Bush is in the hall as well. Obama, 51, paid for his own expenses, including green fees, lodging and food, Earnest said. Taxpayers pay for presidents’ travel and that of his entourage of staff and Secret Service personnel. "

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-02-20/obama-s-short-game-impresses-tiger-woods-in-florida-golf-round.html

And if you're complaining about salary and benefits, did you complain about it when Bush was in office? I'll bet dollars to donuts you didn't give a rat's behind about it *then*, but NOW, it's a BIG DEAL, isn't it?

Even the president has rules to follow on what can be accepted as gifts and what can't...and anything over $335 in value must be disclosed to Congress.

The president is a salaried employee, and as such, even the daily meals for him and his family at the White House (not official functions) are paid for by the president.

You think any president can just accept any amount of gifts, awards, tokens, cash or other items they wish, of any value? Or not have to pay for anything, regardless of whether it's personal or not? Seriously? Do you think the members of the opposite party wouldn't be all over such actions like ugly on an ape, whether they're republican or democrat?

Face it...you guys didn't give a rip when it was *your guy* in office, and you only squawk about it now because it's *the other guy*.

stevehw: Posted: March 16, 2013 12:55 a.m.

Oh, and by the way...that 400K? Guess when that salary was upped from 200K...

You got it...2001. Hmmm...who was president then?

DMeyer: Posted: March 16, 2013 10:41 a.m.

@stevehw

You do realize of course that the Secret Service Agents on BHO's protection detail get paid overtime, just to sit around and do nothing.

Interesting that you criticize the CHP and the Sheriff deputies for doing the same thing when they work at the checkpoints.

stevehw=hypocrite

Code4: Posted: March 16, 2013 10:55 a.m.

Steve Steve Steve. How wrong you are. Bill Clinton approved the salary hike for president in 1999, but didn't take effect until 2001. He was hoping Al Gore was going to win.

Nice try though buddy.

lovelife: Posted: March 16, 2013 12:32 p.m.

Stevie - YOU NEVER get it right!

Thank you Code4 for jumping on this thread before me and correcting that very confused poster! Yes, it was approved during the Clinton era...

And, so that Stevie understands: The president's salary is set by Congress and may not be increased or reduced DURING his or her current term of office.

Would you like to add any more garbage Stevie ???

@DM - "Secret Service Agents on BHO's protection detail get paid overtime, just to sit around and do nothing"

Apparently, it doesn't irritate Liberals when they see HUGE tax dollars going to programs they like. But, when it's a program that they are HELLbent over, the broken record just keeps going on and on!

Do you see the same pattern I do, DM ???

DMeyer: Posted: March 16, 2013 2:29 p.m.

lovelife

Yes, it's blatant.

Code4: Posted: March 16, 2013 5:20 p.m.

Steve has been very quiet now. Probably searching for more incorrect facts.

lovelife: Posted: March 16, 2013 6:28 p.m.

@Code4 - "Steve has been very quiet now. Probably searching for more incorrect facts"

LMFAO !!! Yes, he has been very quiet! And, I'm sure you are correct that he's searching and searching MAINLY to "fire back" at me!

He writes yesterday: "Some people must not know how government works" (referring to me) when the FUNNY part is that HE DOESN'T have a clue !!!

I've always said we're ALL here to learn from each other. There is a wealth of knowledge to share with one another here. I've only been here a little over a year and I haven't seen you before Code4. So, when you see an on-going feud with me and Stevie, you'll understand why. Because, in the past, with his temper problem, he has used profanity at me specifically, so that's why I've got an on-going vendetta with him!

stevehw: Posted: March 17, 2013 12:44 a.m.

Oh, I'm so sorry that I had other things to do today than sit around and discuss government funding and disbursals.

The Secret Service is paid whether the president is locked up in the White House (as you seem to prefer when it's a president of the opposite party) or on travel of any kind (which seems to be okay when it's a president of *your* party). The president is the president 24 hours a day, so what would be your answer? No SS protection when he's on vacation?

And yes, LL, I have know *exactly* how government funding works, thank you very much...

I do notice how the discussion about paying for the president and the first lady's personal expenses while on vacation suddenly disappeared though, to be replaced by "the secret service is getting paid overtime". You sure about that?

stevehw: Posted: March 17, 2013 12:49 a.m.

"And, so that Stevie understands: The president's salary is set by Congress and may not be increased or reduced DURING his or her current term of office."

Uh, yes, I know that...my point was... YOU ALL DIDN'T CARE AT ALL when it was BUSH making that salary. Not a peep from the right wing. NOT ONE TINY LITTLE SOUND OF COMPLAINT. NOT ONE.

Now, though...oooooooh, Obama is making *all this money*, so it MUST be bad.

Where the hell where YOU 8 years ago? I never heard a sound from the righties about Bush's salary, but when a (gasp) democrat gets in office, it's *horrible*.

Give me a break...

lovelife: Posted: March 17, 2013 1:59 a.m.

@Stevie - "The president is the president 24 hours a day"

In the future, if you ever decide you want to get on my "good side" ,,, DON't remind me that the president is the president 24 hours a day! You give me a head-ache every time you mention that Bozo's title !!!

@Stevie - "The secret service is getting paid overtime". You sure about that?"

Secret Service agents are eligible for bonus pay, known as Law Enforcement Availability Pay, essentially a type of overtime. This 25 percent pay is added to locality pay and usually requires agents to work an additional two hours a day over the standard field office 40-hour workweek. In addition, some agents can receive a one-time bonus of 25 percent of annual pay.

If my friend DM has anything else to add to that, I'm sure he will contribute...

So, let the checkpoints continue with ALL that overtime !!! I have NO problem with us taxpayers getting added protection on the roads with checkpoints - overtime or not!

lovelife: Posted: March 17, 2013 2:07 a.m.

Strike that Law Enforcement Availability Pay... I cut and pasted the wrong section. I'll find the right one..

lovelife: Posted: March 17, 2013 2:37 a.m.

It's too late for me to think clearly... DM, I pass the reigns over to you.

DMeyer: Posted: March 17, 2013 12:38 p.m.

lovelife you are correct, it is the Law Enforcement Availability Pay that the secret service do get their overtime pay from.

http://work.chron.com/salaries-secret-service-agents-8297.html

lovelife: Posted: March 17, 2013 1:29 p.m.

OK then, DM...I was so tired late last night, I don't think I knew exactly what I was reading!

Glad that you just confirmed that they do get it!

DMeyer: Posted: March 17, 2013 6:30 p.m.

And stevehw has gone missing again. I guess it's ok for the secret service agents to get paid overtime to sit around on their butts and do nothing as long as they are on BHO's detail.

His hypocrisy keeps coming.

Code4: Posted: March 18, 2013 9:29 a.m.

No Steve, your point was to say that Bush OK'd the salary hike when in fact it was Clinton. We can all see your backpeddling in all your posts.
