Santa Clarita: CHP to conduct DUI checkpoint Friday

Posted: March 12, 2013 11:16 a.m.
Updated: March 12, 2013 11:16 a.m.

On Friday, March 15th, 2013, The California Highway Patrol Newhall Area Office will be conducting a sobriety checkpoint in the unincorporated area of Los Angeles County.  The checkpoint will begin at approximately 6:30 pm and conclude at approximately 2:30 am Saturday, March 16th, 2013.

The location will be announced just prior to the operation.  Motorists approaching the checkpoint will see informational signs advising them of a sobriety checkpoint ahead.  Once diverted into the lane, motorists will be detained only momentarily while an officer explains the purpose of the checkpoint.

The goal of the D.U.I. Checkpoint is to create awareness among the motoring public, to deter people from driving under the influence, and to keep the streets safe for all.  Although checkpoints tend to reduce the number of drinking drivers on the road, the C.H.P. will apprehend D.U.I. drivers who fail to heed our warnings.  Even though arrest totals do not rise dramatically, the psychological influence a checkpoint has on the motoring public is invaluable.

Sobriety checkpoints are conducted in accordance to the guidelines for checkpoint operations outlined in the Supreme Court decision, Ingersol vs. Palmer.  Traffic volume permitting, all vehicles will be checked.  If traffic volume becomes too heavy, vehicles to be checked will be selected by a pre-set standard, such as every 5th or 10th vehicle, in order to assure objectivity.

For further information, please feel free to contact California Highway Patrol Public Information Officer John Lutz at (661) 294-5540.

" The goal of the D.U.I. Checkpoint is to create awareness among the motoring public, to deter people from driving under the influence, and to keep the streets safe for all."

"Even though arrest totals do not rise dramatically, the psychological influence a checkpoint has on the motoring public is invaluable."

Oh, so that's the reason for the checkpoints. Good to know, it appears to be working, awareness has been up significantly.

stevehw: Posted: March 12, 2013 6:14 p.m.

"Even though arrest totals do not rise dramatically"

or at all.

What a stroke of genius...if arrest totals rise, then it must work. If they don't rise, then it must work. If they drop, then it must work. No matter what the data says, IT WORKS!

It works at lining the pockets of the cops making overtime is what it does.

DMeyer: Posted: March 12, 2013 6:35 p.m.

"Ingersol vs. Palmer."

Interesting, DUI checkpoints are not only Constitutional per the highest court in the land, SCOTUS, but also by the highest court in the ridiculously liberal state of Calfiornia.

DMeyer: Posted: March 12, 2013 6:36 p.m.

@stevehw

Would you be against the checkpoints if the cops were making their regular rate of pay instead of overtime?

OICU812: Posted: March 12, 2013 6:44 p.m.

@stevehw - I think you need some cheese with your whine. Maybe you should make some colorful brilliant sign and place yourself at this checkpoint to protest your displeasure with these checkpoints. That my friend would be a fantastic front page article, and most likely would be the highest commented article.

Mropinion: Posted: March 12, 2013 7:17 p.m.

I think stevehw is correct on the different ways data can be interpetrated. I also think spending the money on evening patrols would be way more effective seeing as even now the daily arrests are double or triple of those at the check points. Catching the unlicensed drivers is a good thing.

sreilly11: Posted: March 12, 2013 7:32 p.m.

That would be a Great front page article and you bet the comments would be off the charts! Maybe even Rooster would show up and keep you company or report back to us what is going on..........I'm getting a visual.....come on Stevehw......say you will do it!!!

lovelife: Posted: March 12, 2013 8:02 p.m.

@OICU - "Maybe you should make some colorful brilliant sign and place yourself at this checkpoint to protest"

Hey, if Stevie is going to show up and protest, I want to be there! I want to see it right before my eyes! I'll even get Jim Holt to show up to take the pictures so it can be The Signal's Headline News!

Actually, I think that several of us Signal posters should show up and we'll all introduce ourselves. However, I will wear a bullet proof vest because there are so many "nice" posters here who wish I was dead!

What do-ya-say about that Stevie ????

DMeyer: Posted: March 12, 2013 8:55 p.m.

I'm in! I only pretend to not like you lovelife, lets BBQ some roosters and make a party of it.

ohhyaa: Posted: March 12, 2013 9:49 p.m.

@OICU812, best suggestion ever. I'll donate poster board, paint and popcorn.

ohhyaa: Posted: March 12, 2013 9:52 p.m.

Steve, Steve, Steve, Our new Hometown Hero.

Code4: Posted: March 12, 2013 9:53 p.m.

Steve, I am sure you would have no problem with these checkpoints if you were the one making OT cash. But don't blame the deputies or officers. This money is coming from the State.

lovelife: Posted: March 12, 2013 10:58 p.m.

@DM - " lets BBQ some roosters and make a party of it."

OH, now you don't want to shoot me, but now you want to poison me !!! Nice.... nothing better than a slow death !!!

CastaicClay: Posted: March 12, 2013 11:30 p.m.

Don't you guys ever get tired of yourselves making the same comments?

sreilly11: Posted: March 12, 2013 11:37 p.m.

Code4 - "This money is coming from the State".

Kind of feel bad for the officers involved in these checkpoints. Come on now, who in their right mind is going to turn down overtime pay in these hard times. The issue really belongs smack dab in the State's lap. Let them justify the expense versus the rewards this program to the voters.

Dmeyer/ohhyaa/lovelife - You 3 are worth your weight in gold........you always make me laugh (it's a good thing).........thank you!!!!

scv_donn: Posted: March 13, 2013 9:42 a.m.

I agree with CastaicClay.

Code4: Posted: March 13, 2013 9:59 a.m.

I don't agree with CastaicClay

ohhyaa: Posted: March 13, 2013 11:10 a.m.

Did we scare steve away? Steve are you up to a field trip?

Mropinion: Posted: March 13, 2013 11:32 a.m.

I agree with CastaicClay.

stevehw: Posted: March 13, 2013 12:11 p.m.

You guys must be either 10 years old or a hundred...either way, incapable of having adult conversations about adult things.

DMeyer: Posted: March 13, 2013 1:08 p.m.

stevehw is still being a stick in the mud. He must not get overtime pay where he works.

lovelife: Posted: March 13, 2013 1:26 p.m.

Stevie,

I would think that a kid like you would be ecstatic that the majority of posters have come together and want to see you PERSONALLY protest at the checkpoint! I mean really, that's something to be proud of! Hey, we'll even bring the cheese while you whine! After we see you protest and get carefully placed into the backseat of the cruiser, we'll all go and have cheese and wine at DM's BBQ! Then, while you're in jail, the LEOs might serve you some water while your whine continues!

OICU812: Posted: March 13, 2013 1:48 p.m.

@stevehw: I'm neither 10 nor 100 years old. I'm an adult with a family who happens to be tired of hearing about you whining every time there is an article about a DUI checkpoint. Just offering a solution to your whining and some of the other posters happen to agree. Plain and simple. LET'S BBQ!!

stevehw: Posted: March 13, 2013 1:57 p.m.

hatelife...I'm neither a kid nor am I interested in useless conversations with trolls such as you, although it's interesting that you support supression of free speech. (Typical right-winger...the Constitution is only good insofar as it's something *they* like).

oicu812...how about not reading my posts if you're tired of them?

lovelife: Posted: March 13, 2013 2:16 p.m.

@Stevie - "I'm neither a kid nor am I interested in useless conversations with trolls such as you"

You see Stevie, I completely understand your immaturity and mental disabilities - regardless that you CLAIM that you're not a kid. But, you see, I really DO LOVE LIFE, and that's why I am ALL for checkpoints while attempting to remove losers off the road! So, you can call me "whatever" you like, and it won't even come close to touching a nerve. I never get upset with little boys like you!

lovelife: Posted: March 13, 2013 2:31 p.m.

@Stevie - "It's interesting that you support supression of free speech"

Like I've told you before Stevie, learn how to read my posts. I have NEVER supported supressing free speech. If you had been paying attention in your grade school English classes, you would have learned to read and comprehend English. But instead, you were busy looking at ALL the good looking "boys" in the class, and got competely flustered and didn't learn anything.

I didn't wear a military uniform to "suppress free speech" you silly little boy you! Get it right and simply disappear will ya ???

sreilly11: Posted: March 13, 2013 3:07 p.m.

Well I guess I just wasted my morning........looking for a big enough cake to bake to conceal a hack saw in...........you know, just in case!!!!

lovelife: Posted: March 13, 2013 3:24 p.m.

sreilly - "Well I guess I just wasted my morning"

No you didn't !!! You'll put your imagination to work and create a way to conceal a hack saw... All smart women do!

Wow, I'm licking my chops knowing that there will be cheese and wine for starters, then a BBQ at DM's place, and now your large sheet cake! Will you let us know ahead of time if it's chocolate, or a white cake ???

sreilly11: Posted: March 13, 2013 3:43 p.m.

lovelife: Yellow cake - (think about it)......lol

tpaul: Posted: March 13, 2013 3:57 p.m.

Don't you people have jobs? LOL -- just kidding. It makes my day reading these comments. Maybe they can have a checkpoint at the new round-a-bout. Now that would some fun stuff to watch!!!!

lovelife: Posted: March 13, 2013 4:04 p.m.

@sreilly - "Yellow cake - (think about it)

Well, I can analyze that two ways... I see where you will make yellow cake for Stevie while preparing uranium for him to eat, but he won't be eating with us. He'll be sipping water in jail while continuing his whine!

I want white AND chocolate cake! Please make a large sheet cake because it appears that plenty of us will show up! Just make a section of that sheet cake yellow for Stevie before they haul him off where he belongs!

I'm glad, tpaul, that you are amused just like several others!

sreilly11: Posted: March 13, 2013 4:19 p.m.

Okay..........just put the hubby to task. He is going to design me a cake pan in the shape of a hack saw...........we can accommodate all flavors!!!

By the way: This should be considered my only donation to Steve's bail fund!!!

lovelife: Posted: March 13, 2013 4:30 p.m.

There ya go - put hubby to the challenge! He'll create a nice one, I'm convinced! I can just see Jim Holt taking a picture of that cake and posting it on Headline News the next day! Even the CHP will get a kick out of it!

stevehw: Posted: March 13, 2013 4:58 p.m.

"I have NEVER supported supressing free speech. "

Yes, you have:

"After we see you protest and get carefully placed into the backseat of the cruiser"

QED.

BTW, you're not half as clever as you think you are with your cutesie little name-calling and taunts. And you accuse others of not being grown-up? Seriously?

stevehw: Posted: March 13, 2013 5:00 p.m.

"But instead, you were busy looking at ALL the good looking "boys" in the class, and got competely flustered and didn't learn anything."

Guess this is supposed to imply that I'm gay and therefore, somehow, less human, less important, or less intelligent than you...is that it?

How puerile. Do you still call them "fags" or "homos" to their face, ll?

lovelife: Posted: March 13, 2013 6:03 p.m.

@stevie - "After we see you protest and get carefully placed into the backseat of the cruiser"

That's the best quote from me that you can produce where I suppressed free speech ??? (LoL) Putting you in the backseat of the cruiser is the BEST thing that can happen to ANY annoying little boy.

@stevie - "Guess this is supposed to imply that I'm gay and therefore, somehow, less human, less important, or less intelligent than you...is that it?"

No, I'm NOT implying anything, but I am stating it for a FACT that YOU ARE gay. You, yourself Stevie, admitted it on the thread while protesting Chick-Fil-A ... YOU specifically mentioned that you would rather be with the sexually immoral people. Do you remember saying that ??? I do... Besides, when a person prefers to surround himself with the sexually immoral, that tells a very clear statement RIGHT THERE !!!

@stevie - "I'm gay and therefore, somehow, less human, less important, or less intelligent than you...is that it?"

Yes to EVERYONE of those Stevie !!!

I may be immature and call you cutesie little names, but I LOVE IT so I don't plan on ceasing any time soon!

Bdeezine: Posted: March 13, 2013 6:29 p.m.

Congratulations. You hit a new high in LOW on these boards. Pretty disgraceful comments and uncalled for. How someone's sexuality is even brought up on this board is beyond me. Fourth grade antics at best. You should stay on point instead of trying out tasteless and unfunny comedy. We have open mike night at Marie Callendar's for that.

stevehw: Posted: March 13, 2013 6:31 p.m.

My, my...you are quite the bigot, aren't you?

As well as being intellectually lazy as evidenced by your jumping to conclusions about other peoples' sexuality.

I'm sure your oh-so-clever repartee here amuses certain like-minded, intolerant folks, though.

DMeyer: Posted: March 13, 2013 7:20 p.m.

I smell a hypocrite

stevehw writes to lovelife: "hatelife...I'm neither a kid nor am I interested in useless conversations with trolls such as you, although it's interesting that you support supression of free speech. (Typical right-winger...the Constitution is only good insofar as it's something *they* like). "

Well stevehw how about you and the checkpoints? You don't agree with them and it is well documented that they are Constitutional. Are you a typical right winger?

lovelife: Posted: March 13, 2013 7:36 p.m.

@Bdeezine - "How someone's sexuality is even brought up on this board is beyond me"

It just displays the morality of posters here. Your good friend touts that I'm a bigot... so what ??? Doesn't bother me one bit. He can think and write whatever he wants. Stevie speaks relentlessly on matters that he's against - fine, that's what a forum is about. Tell everyone your feelings about something. I understand from previous DUI threads that you personally, Bdeezine, also don't endorse DUI checkpoints. It's very unfortunate. You have come to these boards stating that you are family oriented, and also want your family to live safely here in SCV. But, you don't seem to agree with MANY others in SCV who have spoken in FAVOR of DUI checkpoints, like myself... Again, very sad...

@Bdeezine - "You should stay on point instead of trying out tasteless and unfunny comedy"

While you stated Bdeezine that I should stay on point, I will bring up this message ONCE AGAIN. If there were MORE DUI checkpoints, chances are that the most recent article about Dennis Keene would not have had to be posted at The Signal. Had there been a checkpoint to remove such an inconsiderate person with eleven prior DUI convictions, we would ALL have less to worry about while we're on the roads. Apparently, he and MANY others ALL have the same mentality to drive as they please while intoxicated and endangering the rest of us on the road. Unfortunately a mother of a young man lost her life because of a drunk who wasn't stopped. How many other good, innocent people have been mutilated, crippled, and killed that I need to mention ???

Are those disgraceful comments Bdeezine ??? I tell it like it is... I guess I should go to Marie Calendar's open mic night to disseminate those comments instead of a DUI thread here at The Signal... But, what good what it do ??? Nothing! Just like it does here... So, that's why I go off topic with tasteless and unfunny comedy...

@DM -"I smell a hypocrite"

Can you say that a bit louder to Stevie ???

stevehw: Posted: March 13, 2013 7:51 p.m.

Interesting how we went from the FACT that all the cops working checkpoints are making overtime pay, and they're even admitting the arrest rate doesn't change, to some bigoted comments about posters' sexual preferences.

Yep, that's what passes for reasoned debate nowadays...

lovelife: Posted: March 13, 2013 7:53 p.m.

"Yep, that's what passes for reasoned debate nowadays"

I'm glad that you can comprehend that Stevie...

Code4: Posted: March 13, 2013 7:59 p.m.

Steve I ask you again. If you were getting the overtime money, would you be in disagreement with the checkpoints?

DMeyer: Posted: March 13, 2013 8:16 p.m.

stevehw

You didn't answer, do you get paid for overtime?

lovelife: Posted: March 13, 2013 8:51 p.m.

Here, I'll stay on-topic...

I wonder if DUI checkpoints would have stopped this ??? Posted in today's paper...

It mentions: "A history check with the Arizona Motor Vehicle Division found her driver’s license had been revoked indefinitely because of an extreme DUI conviction in 2011"

So, it appears that ANOTHER judge just revoked her license INSTEAD of putting her where she could not endanger innocent motorists. How shocking about the system !!!

RatmanG: Posted: March 13, 2013 10:29 p.m.

Having personally known several friends die from being hit by drunk drivers. And myself being struck by what I believe to have been a drunk driver two weeks ago leaving me with a huge medical bill, and a shattered foot. I feel if these checkpoints even stop ONE drunk driver from killing someone you or I care about, it is worth every single penny.

lovelife: Posted: March 13, 2013 10:53 p.m.

@Ratman - "I feel if these checkpoints even stop ONE drunk driver from killing someone you or I care about, it is worth every single penny"

Thank you for your stance on checkpoints! I remember when you asked for the public's assistance if anyone happened to see the hit and run that did this to you. If I was anywhere near at that time, I would gladly step up and hand you the information you deserve. How sad that you now have a shattered foot with all the medical bills to go with it.

@Ratman - "I feel if these checkpoints even stop ONE drunk driver from killing someone you or I care about, it is worth every single penny"

I take it that you mean EVEN the OVERTIME that so many people here bi*ch about!

DMeyer: Posted: March 13, 2013 11:20 p.m.

Hear! Hear!

So sorry to hear what happened to you RatmanG, the good thing is that you are still with us. I don't wish anyone harm but the dolts that are dead set against the checkpoints would definitely sing a different tune if it were them or someone close to them who was killed or maimed by a drunk driver.

lovelife: Posted: March 13, 2013 11:29 p.m.

@Mr.O - "I also think spending the money on evening patrols would be way more effective"

Agreed... But, ALL 5 of the drunk drivers that have seriously hit me during broad daylight, NO LEOs were anywhere around. Again, No LEOs were anywhere around - in fact - no witnesses or drive-by's stopped to help or call 911... They must have known that I was "LOVELIFE" ... You know, that mean guy that posts mean things at The Signal website!!! :)

lovelife: Posted: March 13, 2013 11:42 p.m.

Let me clarify my last statement. I agreed with Mr.O that spending the money on evening patrols would be way more effective.

I mean THAT with the understanding that's IN ADDITION to DUI checkpoints... Not, in lieu of...

DMeyer: Posted: March 14, 2013 12:27 a.m.

@lovelife

Agreed. Any and all types of DUI enforcement is the key. Historically speaking we as a society have done a very poor job in education, interdiction and punishment when it comes to drinking and driving.

RatmanG: Posted: March 14, 2013 3:11 a.m.

Thank you for your sympathy love & D. @lovelife: Yes, this is an important enough issue to me that if a Deputy is going to be asked to work over their required daily hours, and they can physically do said job during that overtime. I believe they should be compensated with overtime pay. I don't know the nickels & dimes it costs each of us individually, but I believe it is worth it, to keep our community safe from even ONE more death related to impaired driving.

lovelife: Posted: March 14, 2013 12:33 p.m.

@Ratman & DM - "We as a society have done a very poor job in education, interdiction and punishment when it comes to drinking and driving"

Absolutely! As a society we have failed miserably. But, we ALL know why... The system is way too lienient on abusers who have NO regards for human life. How does the system let a woman in Arizona still maintain a motor vehicle when she doesn't have a valid driver license - that has been indefinitely revoked ??? Then she goes flying thru a red light and kills a motorcyclist whose life is terminated moments later. How does the system continue to let a drunk with 5 prior DUI convictions still drive and then hit me head-on ??? The problem begins all the way at the top, and until things change in the courts, we will continue to read more and more articles of innocent lives maimed or killed because of people who don't give a hoot about anybody else but themselves. Then the aftermath of what it does to the families who are left behind.

@Ratman - "I believe they should be compensated with overtime pay"

I'm happy to learn that you believe that their efforts to keep us safe are worth the extra money they earn. I like your rationale when you say that even ONE more death could be avoided by an intoxicated driver. It absolutely amazes me about the posters on the different DUI threads who are adamantly opposed to a checkpoint because they might be delayed 10 minutes while determining that they are not intoxicated. They fear their rights have been infringed upon. I wonder how they would feel if they lost a wife, daughter, or parent(s) in a DUI crash ??? My co-worker lost both his parents instantly in a DUI crash.

There is NO price tag on a human life. I don't care how much LEOs are paid to do their job while keeping the drunks off the road! Enough is enough!

lovelife: Posted: March 14, 2013 12:36 p.m.

Now, let that BBQ commence !!! Jim Holt, get your camera!
