Sunny skies will greet Santa Clarita Valley residents by Saturday afternoon after a late-season drenching that brought six inches of snow to the mountains and shut down the Grapevine overnight, forecasters said.

Snow, rain, hail and lightning bolts were unleashed around Southern California during the storm that hit the area Thursday night and continued through today. The Grapevine was reopened about 7:30 a.m. today following nearly six hours being closed due to snow.

Rainfall totals in the Newhall Pass were recorded at 1.08 of an inch during the 24 hours ending at 6 p.m. today and .59 of an inch over the same time period in Saugus, National Weather Service officials reported.

Low temperatures due to hit 38 degrees tonight were expected to give way to highs in the 60s Saturday after morning patchy fog burns off.

The day will mark the beginning of a warming trend, with highs Sunday reaching 72, Monday highs of 77 and Tuesday kissing 80 degrees under sunny skies. Breezy conditions are expected throughout the week.

Despite traffic accidents and other problems brought on by Friday’s storm, the precipitation was welcome in Southern California, which has seen a particularly dry winter.

As of Thursday night, the downtown Los Angeles rainfall tally was more than 7 inches below normal for the rain-year that began on July 1.
