Two cars plunged down ravines off San Francisquito Canyon Road today in separate and unrelated crashes.
In both cases, the driver was hurt and taken to the hospital.

Both crashes involved a single vehicle and both happened near Los Angeles Power Plant No. 2 on the winding canyon road.

“He was driving too fast, went over the side and landed in a river bed,” California Highway Patrol Officer Eric Bejar said of the first driver to go over the edge of the road.

“He climbed out,” the CHP officer said. “He had minor injuries.”

The single-vehicle crash happened about 12:10 p.m., when CHP received reports of a traffic collision on San Francisquito south of Dry Gulch Road.

That motorist was driving a Mini Cooper that left the roadway and plunged 30 feet over the side. The driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital.

The second crash happened less than four hours later when a car crashed more than 300 feet over the side.

That driver was airlifted to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital with serious injuries.

At 3:30 p.m., CHP officers received reports of the crash in the 35000 block of San Francisquito Canyon Road near Stator Lane.

CHP officers who arrived at the crash site called for a tow truck equipped with 300 feet of cable to pull the vehicle from the ravine.

Last Thursday a motorist rolled his car several times in the same area after he pulled onto the gravel shoulder of San Francisquito Canyon Road to let a “tailgater” pass.

The man’s car ended up in a drainage ditch 60 feet from the road near Power Plant No. 2, but he was unhurt.

It is a bit difficult to sympathize with people who wrecked their cars by driving too fast.

Look, I know this sounds crazy/stupid but I'm going to say it anyway: If everyone obeys the speed limit in San Francisquito Canyon then there will be far fewer accidents.

Many people with a valid, reality based reason, to use the canyon roads daily or weekly, do so without crashing. It is the idiot joy riding tourists who think they enjoy driving twisting roads that do this. I just wish they would coordinate with the bicyclist events, motorcycles, and weekend Ferrari club to all cancel each other out in one massive pile up at the bridge.

Sounds like they ran out of talent.

I drive San Francisquito Canyon EVERY day- and I am surprised there are not MORE accidents- people drive this canyon like it's a speedway- they tailgate, they pass people on a double yellow line, I've seen people drive on the WRONG side of the road- where the stop sign is at Stator (by Power plant 1) they run right through that stop sign- passing all the cars that are waiting to make that turn- just so they don't have to wait- people speed up and down this canyon DAILY! I've seen dead deer, coyote's, horses, etc- because people drive SO fast, they can't stop- are people ever going to slow down? what is it going to take?? how many more fatalities? I drive this road with my CHILD- I have to pull over all most on a daily basis because I am being tailgated! Its hard to have sympathy for those that drive so fast and end up plunging 300 feet down a ravine! Slow down, go the speed limit!! Leave 5 minutes earlier!

JDA - I couldn't agree with you more. I too drive the canyon every day and have seen all of the same things you mentioned. I drive the speed limit or about 5 mph above so I'm not a slow poke. I usually have to pull over at least twice in each direction to let tailgaiters pass. The most idiotic part of it all is that I usually catch up to the wreckless drivers at the stop sign/light that bookend the canyon. So they saved what? 20 seconds at most? Totally worth endangering lives (sarcasm).

Add another one this morning...same spot...first bridge going north is collecting cars faster then they can make them....still can not understand how they can get up that much speed on that section.
