A pedestrian killed early Saturday morning after he was struck by an SUV in the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 was identified Tuesday as a 53-year-old homeless man.

Dead is Timothy Hannum Hartwig, said Lt. Fred Corral of the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.

“His cause of death is multiple blunt force trauma, an accident involving a vehicle versus pedestrian,” Corral said. “He was apparently homeless.”

On Saturday, about 1 a.m., the driver of a 2003 Toyota Tacoma identified as a 49-year-old Pasadena man was traveling south on Interstate 5 when he felt an impact on the front of his vehicle, according to the collision report prepared by Investigator K. Schilhabel of the California Highway Patrol.

Hartwig was walking on the freeway in the southbound lanes just north of Rye Canyon Road, Schilhabel reported.

The driver, who pulled over and dialed 911, believed he hit an animal, the officer said. He was later arrested on suspicion of drunken driving.
