Officials with the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office have identified the pedestrian killed early Saturday morning after he was struck by an SUV in the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 but are still trying to reach his next of kin, a spokesman said Sunday.

The victim was described only as a 53-year-old man who was pronounced dead at the scene.

On Saturday, about 1 a.m., the driver of a 2003 Toyota Tacoma identified as a 49-year-old Pasadena man was traveling south on Interstate 5 “in light traffic” when he “felt an impact to the front end of his Toyota,” according to the collision report prepared by Investigator K. Schilhabel of the California Highway Patrol.

The 53-year-old pedestrian was walking on the freeway in the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 just north of Rye Canyon Road, Schilhabel reported.

The driver believed he hit an animal, the officer said in the report.

When the collision happened, the driver pulled over and called 911.

The pedestrian was struck by the SUV’s left front bumper, hood and windshield, Schilhabel wrote in the report.

“He was run over by other unidentified vehicles, which did not remain on scene,” Schilhabel reported.

The driver suffered small lacerations to his left hand, the officer said.

A 25-year-old Los Angeles man, who was a passenger in the SUV, was not injured.

Alcohol is suspected to be a factor in the collision.

The driver of the Tacoma was arrested at the scene, CHP Officer Jennifer Cassidy said Saturday.

"On Saturday, about 1 a.m., the driver of a 2003 Toyota Tacoma"
"The pedestrian was struck by the SUV’s left front bumper, hood and windshield"
"The driver of the Tacoma was arrested at the scene"
Toyota Tacoma is a pickup truck. What kind of SUV was it?1? Why was the pickup driver arrested?2? Outstanding parking tickets?3? Wants and warrants from Texas?4? How was alcohol involved?5? Who was driving the SUV that hit the pedestrian?6? What are the accusations/pending charges against Toyota Taco Truck Boy?7? Who was the decedent?8? Why was he walking in freeway traffic lanes at night?9? Was the decedent drunk?10? What lane did this happen in?11? What color was the Tacoma?12? What color was the SUV?13?
Why does the headline read "Identified" when he is not in the article?14? Were any roosters heard crowing under street light skys?15? Was there any rooster cr@p on the pavement?16?
Dang. I thought this was 20 questions and I was going to win!

"Police ID pedestrian killed"
"Officials with the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office have identified the pedestrian killed"
All this means is: the coroner found his ID in pocket. And despite the incorrect headline, the police did not?!?! For Jim's benefit: Coroner and Police are two very different categories of government officials. Its that Dead versus Alive thing.
