Gridlock: No budging at the budget-cuts deadline

Gridlocked once more, President Barack Obama and Republican congressional leaders refused to budge in their budget standoff Friday as $85 billion in across-the-board spending cuts bore down on individual Americans and the nation’s still-recovering economy.

“None of this is necessary,” said the president after a sterile White House meeting that suggested a lengthy standoff.

Even before Obama formally ordered the cuts required by midnight, their impact was felt thousands of miles away. In Seattle, the King County Housing Authority announced it had stopped issuing housing vouchers under a federal program that benefits “elderly or disabled households, veterans, and families with children.”

The president met with top lawmakers for less than an hour at the White House, then sought repeatedly to fix the blame on Republicans for the broad spending reductions and any damage they inflict.

“They’ve allowed these cuts to happen because they refuse to budge on closing a single wasteful loophole to help reduce the deficit,” he said, renewing his demand for a comprehensive deficit-cutting deal that includes higher taxes.

Republicans said they wanted deficit cuts, too, but not tax increases. “The president got his tax hikes on Jan. 1,” House Speaker John Boehner told reporters, a reference to a $600 billion increase on higher wage earners that cleared Congress on the first day of the year.

Now, he said after the meeting, it is time take on “the spending problem here in Washington.”

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky was equally emphatic. “I will not be part of any back-room deal, and I will absolutely not agree to increase taxes,” he vowed in a written statement.

After Friday’s deadline to avoid sequestration came and went, Rep. Howard “Buck” McKeon, R-Santa Clarita, placed the blame for the latest budget standoff squarely on the shoulders of Obama and Democrats.

“As I see it, he’s not been serious about fixing this,” McKeon told The Signal in an interview Friday. “He’s the only one that’s elected by everyone in the country; it’s his responsibility to pull people together and to lead.”

McKeon, chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, used similar language during a news conference earlier Friday.

“I have never in my lifetime seen such a lack of leadership and truth-telling emanating from the White House and from our commander-in-chief,” McKeon said.

"Housing Authority announced it had stopped issuing housing vouchers under a federal program that benefits “elderly or disabled households, veterans, and families with children”

Way to go dipsh**s !!! Instead of reducing your bloated salaries (for being so inept and can't do your jobs satisfactorily), you then decide to DO NOTHING because YOU would not give into a budget that would be a balance of a "happy medium" ...

So, in the end, now the elderly citizens (those that ARE the BACKBONE of THIS country, and the unfortunate disabled people, children, and EVEN the VETERANS (the HEROES of OUR country) are now "foooooked" because of YOU dips!

This president, along with ALL of Congress should have mud pies thrown in their faces! BHOs salary with perks amounting to $450k a year is disgusting! NOT ONE member of Harry Reids cronies deserve a damn dime. What are we paying these people for ???

While everything is facing severe cut backs, not ONE word is mentioned to cut back on the amount of aid in BILLIONS that we hand out to the people who hate us...

"Mitch McConnell - a Republican - “I will not be part of any back-room deal, and I will absolutely not agree to increase taxes”

Again folks, which party is really on YOUR side ??? I hope Americans wake up some day and realize what party is REALLY looking out for the American people !!! Now we have four more years of this disgusting Administration with "business as usual" which will continue to destroy families while struggling so hard to make ends meet.

This is absolutely no surprise. The one thing Obama has shown is that he does not know how to work with those on the other side of the aisle. He also will put the blame on everyone else and refuses to accept responsibility. And as we are all witnessing he won't make any spending cuts, he just wants to keep increasing taxes and keep spending us into oblivion.

But on the plus side he is a cool guy and he has friends in hollywood so lets vote for him!

@DM - "Obama has shown is that he does not know how to work with those on the other side of the aisle"

I would prefer that you re-word that sentence please. How about "Obama has shown us that he WILL NOT work with those on the other side of the aisle" ???

@sreilly - "Soooo easy to pick you out as one of the "Good Guys"!!!!!

Thanks! Very much appreciated!

@lovelife You are right, I stand corrected.

itzreality: Posted: March 2, 2013 11:32 p.m.

I do not believe for one minute there is a budget crisis. First we need to stop sending billions of dollars overseas to other countries each day. I was always taught that charity begins at home. This money belongs to the American people first not other nations.

When these self-rightous elected morans pass a budget such as in January to avoid the cliff, they need to take out the cars, pork and other goodies they out in for themselves.

Let's not forget these no do gooders on election day!

Michelle Obama scares the snot out of me. I believe that Barack is terrified of her and will do anything to avoid the nightly beat downs that she most likely inflicts upon him. God save us all if she gets into an office of real power, she's a whole lot of angry.

sreilly11: Posted: March 3, 2013 1:00 p.m.

ohhyaa - First time he was elected.....Michelle wore this black and red dress that looked or made her look like a Black Widow.........have never gotten that vision out of my head.......you see first impressions, just like your Mama told you do make a difference! I'm bad!!!

lovelife: Posted: March 3, 2013 1:02 p.m.

@ohhyaa - "I believe that Barack is terrified of her and will do anything to avoid the nightly beat downs that she most likely inflicts upon him"

Wetting my pants laughing so hard !!! I hope that Michelle is following the Jodi Arias trial closely... Maybe Michelle should call Jodi in prison and ask her what manual she used... (lol)But then on the other hand, I don't want Joe "jackass" to get promoted!

Get off the campaign trail, President Santa Claus, and start dealing with the reality of a GOP House of Reps who are intent on stopping your socialist programs. The GOP holds the House because a great many Americans do not apprecaite Obama's BIG Guvmint womb to tomb entitlement policies.

lovelife: Posted: March 3, 2013 2:22 p.m.

@OldReliable -

Well stated, and you are 100% correct!

I am concerned that our votes are no longer even counted.

How would we know if a coup has already occurred?
