Fuel taxes set to rise, become highest in the nation

Californians’ pain at the pump may get a little more potent after members of the state Board of Equalization voted Thursday to raise the state’s fuel tax by 3.5 cents per gallon.

Once the increase goes into effect July 1, Californians will pay an average of 70.6 cents per gallon in combined local, state and federal taxes, according to the American Petroleum Institute.

This figure is the highest in the nation, with New York coming in second place with 69 cents per gallon in total taxes.
By comparison, the state with the lowest amount of gas taxes is Alaska, with total taxes of 26.4 cents a gallon.

The increase was approved by a 3-2 vote with board member and former state Sen. George Runner voting against it.

“I cannot support a more-than-half-a-billion-dollar tax increase on struggling Californians,” Runner said Thursday.

Under California law, the Board of Equalization reviews excise tax levels by March 1 each year.

California collected a record-high $8.3 billion in fuel taxes during the 2011-2012 fiscal year, according to the Board of Equalization.

Since the fiscal year ends June 30, that amount does not include data from September or October, when the average price of gasoline was the highest recorded in state history.

lovelife: Posted: February 28, 2013 11:00 p.m.

And, they're proposing toll lanes ??? Do ya really think average people can pay even MORE now with this gas tax, in addition to pay toll fees ??? Thank you George Runner - a truly good man looking out for good people's interests. You are a TRUE Republican. Leave it to the DemocRATS who want more and more taxes for everything! They NEVER stop! This is off subject, that is; the gas tax increase - but I always enjoy letting UN-informed Americans know that it's always the DemocRATS that squeeze the $**t out of us financially $$$$

Social Security - Franklin Roosevelt, a Democrat, introduced the Social
Security (FICA) Program. He promised:

1.) That participation in the Program would be completely voluntary,

2.) That the participants would only have to pay 1% of the first $1,400 of their annual Incomes into the Program,

3.) That the money the participants elected to put Into the Program would be deductible from Their income for tax purposes each year,

4.) That the money the participants put into the Independent 'Trust Fund' rather than into the General Operating Fund, and therefore, wouldOnly be used to fund the Social Security Retirement Program, and no other Government program, and,

5.) That the annuity payments to the retirees would NEVER be taxed as income.

Since many people have paid into FICA for years and are now receiving a Social Security check every month --
And then finding that we are getting taxed on 85% of the money we paid to the Federal Government to 'put
Away -- you may be interested in the following:
----------------------------------------
Q : Which Political Party took Social Security from the Independent 'Trust Fund' and put it into the General Fund so that Congress could spend it?
A: It was Lyndon Johnson and the democratically Controlled House and Senate.
----------------------------------------
Q: Which Political Party eliminated the income tax Deduction for Social Security (FICA) withholding?
A: The Democratic Party.
--------------------------
Q: Which Political Party started taxing Social Security annuities?
A: The Democratic Party, with Al Gore casting the 'tie-breaking' deciding vote as President of the Senate, while he was Vice President of the US.
----------------------------------------
Q: Which Political Party decided to start giving Annuity payments to immigrants?
A: That's right! Jimmy Carter and the DemocRATic Party. Immigrants moved into this country, and at age 65,began to receive Social Security payments! The
Democratic Party gave these payments to them, even though they never paid a dime into it!
Then, after violating the original contract (FICA), the Democrats turn around and tell you that the Republicans want to take your Social Security away!

And the worst part about it is, uninformed citizens believe it!

DMeyer: Posted: February 28, 2013 11:16 p.m.

Why did the Board of Equalization raise the taxes? It doesn't mention the reason for the hike.

LosRubios: Posted: February 28, 2013 11:17 p.m.

Yet another example of the vote for the Democratic Party sticking it to the man. NOT. Enjoy your higher gas taxes, higher sales taxes, higher payroll taxes. In the meantime, those making over $400K a year have barely noticed. Well done America, "stupid is as stupid does" should have been the Democratic Party's call to action for the 2012 election.

Bdeezine: Posted: March 1, 2013 1:44 a.m.

Sure... bend us over a little more. How about a gas usage tax too, so after we pay to pump, we pay to burn the gas too, maybe like another 25 cents a gallon. Then a cleanup tax to help scrub the freeway from our exhaust as well as an additional temporary tax to cover a special focus committee to research why gas prices are climbing.

Rocketeer: Posted: March 1, 2013 2:56 a.m.

@DMeyer: Because they want more money. To steal. Tax increases have a "why" only when the gov't is not corrupt and thieving.

Hey, I'm completely in favor of this increase. Only costs me an extra $25 per year and hopefully really screws over all the idiots who voted for Brown and our lib dem state senate. I honestly wish they'd raise the taxes by a buck a gallon.

@lovelife: Well said.

sreilly11: Posted: March 1, 2013 3:02 a.m.

Dmeyer - To offset budget shortfalls.

ricketzz: Posted: March 1, 2013 9:06 a.m.

You can't raise the cost of burning gasoline high enough for me. Take the bus. Ride the train. Build cities vertically, not sideways.

OldReliable: Posted: March 1, 2013 11:30 a.m.

We cannot give Democrats enough money to spend... waste! Thanks alot Governor Moonbeam!

src: Posted: March 1, 2013 11:35 a.m.

Highest vehicle registration cost in the nation, now the highest gasoline taxes, over 10% unemployment, more illegal immigrants than any other state, a governance that runs in the red year after year, a broken education system... This is what happens when people allow the liberals to rule. Good job!!! Now with Arnold's (he was no R by the way) "global warming final solutions act", more business and workers are leaving for greener pastures. Better build a bullet train!!!

Bdeezine: Posted: March 1, 2013 1:10 p.m.

Uh.... sorry, but Ahnold the Terminator was a Republican and you voted him in thinking he was the savior. Funny when a Republican does a lousy job, he wasn't a "real" Republican. Yeah, right.....

Let's face it. The solution is to clean house, both R and D. Throw the bums out. I can't think of ANYONE at either the State or Federal level that has our best interests in mind. It's all special interests, re-election hysteria and the lining of pockets...BOTH PARTIES!!

philellis: Posted: March 1, 2013 4:43 p.m.

Bd, there were a number of us that stated that Arnold was a Rhino before the election. Unfortunately, too many were fooled.

lovelife: Posted: March 1, 2013 4:49 p.m.

@Rocketeer -

I'm glad that you enjoyed that. It's so unfortunate that many people don't realize which Party is REALLY looking out for THEM. Raising fuel taxes and ALL other taxes always hurt the low income and middle class families the most. Wealthy people won't be affected by ANY taxes - they'll still have their yacht's, planes, and Mercedes toys and wont be the least bit affected. Their lives will still go on just fine - unfortunately these and other taxes just bring down people and causes turmoil with financial problems while trying to stay out of quicksand...

src: Posted: March 1, 2013 4:56 p.m.

I voted him in? I was in college in another state when you fools fell for him! He always was a democrat, just like his wife's whole jackbooted family. Y'all were so smart you for moonbeam again, way to think that one through. lol!

Bdeezine: Posted: March 1, 2013 5:21 p.m.

If the Republicans had offered up something besides that idiot, Meg Whitman, maybe something could have changed. Here was a woman telling us we have to be more frugal... but she ends up spending $44 per vote and STILL LOST. Her great ideas all involved massive layoffs and offshoring... that was our choice. Of course she lost. How about someone with some vision?

DMeyer: Posted: March 2, 2013 12:57 a.m.

How about someone with some vision?

Um, someone like Jerry Brown??

A man who has a proven track record as failed leader. All that matters is that he is a slick politician who knows what strings to pull and what back room deals to make to get elected. Despite all that he really has a big advantage in that the D is next to his name and the least intelligent voters in the nation only look for the D when they vote.

sreilly11: Posted: March 2, 2013 1:19 a.m.

Wonder if the democrats will ever learn.....you don't vote a loser in twice.

ohhyaa: Posted: March 2, 2013 11:17 a.m.

Can I at least have a glass of wine before I take it with no vaseline?

sreilly11: Posted: March 3, 2013 1:40 p.m.

Drink fast ohhyaa!!!

castaicjack: Posted: March 3, 2013 7:50 p.m.

The increase was mandated under laws signed by Republican governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and has nothing to do with governor Brown:
http://www.dailynews.com/news/ci_22701371/california-raises-gasoline-tax-by-3-5-cents
Too bad the Signal didn't include that important fact in their reporting...

DMeyer: Posted: March 3, 2013 8:17 p.m.

@castaicjack

The laws that mandated the increase were written by the State of California legislature, which is controlled, and has been controlled by the Democrats for decades. The Signal forgot to include that important fact too. The Signal was kind enough to point out that CA gasoline taxes are the highest in the nation. They did not point out that the State of California also has the highest income taxes in the nation, again thanks to our Democrat controlled legislature.

Just admit it, the Democrats want to raise your taxes, the Republicans want to lower them.

castaicjack: Posted: March 3, 2013 8:42 p.m.

DMeyer:
You need to be keeping up on current events. The Republicans just want to change HOW you're taxed. Here's what to expect:
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/01/25/us/politics/republican-governors-push-taxes-on-sales-not-income.html?_r=0

DMeyer: Posted: March 3, 2013 11:21 p.m.

@castaicjack

Are you saying that the Dems don't want to raise taxes? And the Dems want to cut spending???

castaicjack: Posted: March 4, 2013 12:02 a.m.

DMeyer:
I'm saying Republicans plan, as per my previously noted link, to increase sales taxes. And that will increase the cost of gasoline along with just about everything else you'll buy. As far as Democrats raising taxes to increase revenue goes, it appears they'll do so by closing corporate loopholes and increasing taxes on companies doing business overseas. Additionally, it appears they'll also propose cutting back on pork barrel defense programs we don't need.

DMeyer: Posted: March 4, 2013 12:45 a.m.

castaicjack

Your link pointed out that Republican governors were *lowering* income taxes and would rely on higher sales taxes to stimulate growth. The Republicans are actually lowering income taxes.

As for the Dems, they are not just going to raise taxes on companies doing business over seas and close loopholes on corporations. They have and will continue to raise your taxes and mine, that is if you are like me, a citizen middle class hard working stiff. They can only take us so far in debt while continuing to give hand outs. Taxing the rich and closing loopholes on corporations doesn't come even close to cutting it, the real fix is cutting our out of control spending. This is something BHO and Harry Reid refuse to do. And since they refuse to do that the middle class and the children of the middle class will be stuck with the bill.

Get off the kool aid, it's clouding your vision.

DMeyer: Posted: March 4, 2013 12:52 a.m.

As for the Dems planning on reducing pork barrel spending, you and I have already heard this lie from Obama and the Dems. They just keep telling that lie, and some people (you for instance) will believe it.

See how much pork barrel spending cuts the Dems insisted on cutting when the Hurricane Sandy bill was passed?

castaicjack: Posted: March 4, 2013 1:01 a.m.

DMeyer,
As most of us know, Republican governor Christie led the pack in pushing for funding for Hurricane Sandy so you're more than a bit off base in your comment.
The Republicans have a long track record of insisting on funding for defense programs our country doesn't need. Keep thinking the way you do and lose more elections...

DMeyer: Posted: March 4, 2013 10:55 a.m.

Keep thinking that way? I'm an Independent voter, I voted for Obama the first time. After his miserable performance in his first term I could not justify giving him another 4 years.

Yes Christie did ask for funding for hurricane Sandy relief, and rightfully so. Gov. Christie did not ask for that relief bill to be loaded with pork belly handouts for others that were in no way affected by Sandy. Interesting that BHO again given the chance to cut out that pork barrel spending chose not too. And you expect him to start doing so when????

You know he won't. But you won't call him a liar, too much kool aid I guess. I've never tried it, I'll keep passing on it, you keep on guzzling it, it seems to make you sleep better at night.
