Driver unhurt as car rolls over

A motorist rolled his car several times Thursday after he reportedly pulled onto the gravel shoulder to let a “tailgater” pass on San Francisquito Canyon Road, said a man who towed the wrecked car from the crash site.

Shortly after 10:15 a.m. Thursday, a man driving a 2003 Toyota Avion lost control when he pulled over because another car was following too closely, said Al Furman Jr. of Al Furman & Sons Towing.

Officers with the California Highway Patrol called Furman to remove the wrecked car, specifically requesting a flatbed truck with at least 50 feet of tow cable.

The car ended up off of San Francisquito Canyon Road, about seven miles north of Copper Hill Drive, near Power Plant No. 2.

“The car was 60 feet off the road in a drainage ditch,” said Furman. “He (the driver) said he was being tailgated so he pulled over onto the shoulder and it was dirt.

“The car went sideways and flipped,” he said.

Furman said the driver was not hurt in the rollover.

It's a Toyota Avalon, but you're getting better Jim. Keep it up. I am only sorry I didn't know what color the car was. Maybe next time.

Oh MY, the damage that tailgating can cause ??
If your being tailgated just pump your brakes a couple of times
your rear brake lights will flash red in hopes that the tailgater will back off!

chefgirl358: Posted: March 1, 2013 2:01 a.m.

Ladi, that's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. First of all, it's dangerous to all involved and highly inflammatory. If you want to achieve the same result without the danger (except for the road rage part), simply turn on your headlights because it makes your rear lights come on, giving the tailgater the impression you are hitting the brakes, without actually doing so. Or you can do what you should which is, get the hell out of the way!

Rocketeer: Posted: March 1, 2013 3:14 a.m.

chefgirl, turning on your lights won't activate the third brake light. I don't think that would fool anyone. And this article is about someone who DID get out of the way. Do you understand that by "rolled car several times" they meant "horrible accident that wrecked their car?"

chefgirl358: Posted: March 1, 2013 11:19 a.m.

I was simply responding to Ladi's stupid comment, and yes I realize the 3rd brake light doesn't come on...and yet it still works to fluster the following driver because, guess what, sometimes people don't have ALL functioning lights.. I know exactly what the article said and I wasn't commenting on the accident at all. In fact, what part of what I said, had ANYTHING to do with the accident? You make it sound as though I downplayed what happened, when in fact, I never addressed it at all.

Glad the driver is safe!
It really is getting dangerous to drive around here, especially when you try to drive the speed limit!
I will never understand and really don't want to know what the reasons are for driving at such a high rate of speed, that puts EVERYBODY at risk...
It is really scary sometimes, as if this is a normal.
HMPH! How old is this chefgirl, cause calling someones comment stupid, is sooo childish! She states, "Or you can do what you should which is, get the hell out of the way!"

Yeah right! All the maniacs on the road, need to slow the heck down, and stop being a bully in a car/van/truck...
In United States law, reckless driving is a major moving traffic violation. It is usually a more serious offense than careless driving, improper driving, or driving without due care and attention and is often punishable by fines, imprisonment, and/or driver's license suspension or revocation.

Reckless driving is often defined as a mental state in which the driver displays a wanton disregard for the rules of the road; the driver often misjudges common driving procedures, often causing accidents and other damages. Reckless driving has been studied by psychologists[1] who found that reckless drivers score high in risk-taking personality traits.
(Thanks Wikipedia)
I am especially tired of the "bumper humper's" myself, but I just adjust my mirror and ignore, if you didn't want to drive the posted speed because your late, then maybe you should have left earlier.

When someone tailgates me I just slow down, the brakes work but you just might get someone quite upset. People in the SCV are the craziest drivers I have seen & they are always in a big hurry.

Chefgirl358 are you one of these crazy drivers that tailgate? Your comment says to get the hell out of the way kind of gave it away. Just slow down & take a deep breath, you will get there.

I drive that road every day and where he said he pulled over is a very large area. I do not think that is what he was doing. That car was way off in the brush and it had to be going at a fast rate of speed. He never made it out of the corner before the bridge.

wilsker: Posted: March 1, 2013 5:04 p.m.

I've been driving that road twice a day for nearly nine years. The senseless acts of wreckless and agressive driving that I have seen during that time is shocking. The most surprising thing to me is that a lot of it is done by older drivers (40+) who should know better. The method to curtail tailgating that I've found to be particularly effective is to turn on my windshield wipers. The over spray immediately backs them off and they don't know if I've done it on purpose so it cuts down on retalitory behavior.

You have to have a death wish to take a two-lane blacktop with blind corners. I no longer have the guts to do such dangerous things.

RoosterBooster: Posted: March 2, 2013 3:55 p.m.

Turn on your cruise control; set it; then adjust the speed downward until they GET THE HECK OUT OF YOUR mirror. You can also turn on your emergency flashers

The 2014 Toyota Avion is a brand new model that has an automatic parking feature. You just pull onto the shoulder and the vehicle tumbles itself into the weeds (AKA passive anti-theft vegetation)
