The Whittaker-Bermite Citizens Advisory Group meets next week for an update on the cleanup of the local brownfield that was a munitions-manufacturing plant for decades.

The group of concerned local residents will meet Wednesday evening for updated information on the spread of perchlorate contamination in underground water and details on how volatile organic compounds will be removed from the site.

Questions from the public will also be taken.

Whittaker-Bermite covers nearly 1,000 acres of land south of Soledad Canyon Road from Bouquet Canyon Road eastward.

The site was a munitions plant operated from the 1930s through 1987, and the soil is polluted with perchlorate and other contaminants. The 996 acres are sometimes called Santa Clarita’s “doughnut hole” because of their strategic central location within the city.

The meeting runs 7 p.m.-9 p.m. Wednesday at Santa Clarita United Methodist Church, 26640 Bouquet Canyon Road, Saugus.
