A 15-year-old boy injured a week ago when his bicycle and an SUV collided on a Valencia street remains in the hospital, a local sheriff’s deputy said this week.

“He’s expected to survive,” said Deputy Josh Dubin of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

On Feb. 13, shortly after 5:30 p.m., the bike rider and an SUV collided at Fairview Place and Waterford Drive, Traffic Branch Deputy Travis Kelly said at the time.

The boy, whose identity is not expected to be disclosed because he is a minor, remains at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, Dubin said.

The deputy said earlier the boy had suffered brain damage. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
The incident is being investigated by the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station Traffic Office.

Any witnesses are asked to call Kelly at (661) 255-1121.

What a nightmare for any parent! Wishing, hoping and praying for a speedy, full recovery.

It amazes me that parents don't make their kids wear helmets. When I was growing up, no helmet = no bike. I see little kids riding *with* their parents all the time around SCV and am always amazed how the parents don't require their kids to wear one...

CA Vehicle Code section 21212(a) requires everyone under the age of 18 to wear a helmet while riding a bicycle, scooter, or skateboard.

A side benefit of this law is that thanks to economy of scale the helmets are easy to find and inexpensive.

Nonetheless, I too hope this kid can make a full recovery.

The sheriffs need to ticket anyone under 18 without a helmet. It is a law after all.
