Sixteen businesses in a shopping center at The Old Road and Hasley Canyon Road in Castaic were blacked out Tuesday after a car slammed into a Southern California Edison electrical box in the parking lot of a Ralphs grocery store.

A BMW SUV hit the equipment box about noon, causing a power outage that affected all the businesses in the shopping center, a spokeswoman for the utility said.

Edison work crews were called to the scene, utility spokeswoman Anna Frutos-Sanchez said. Utility officials hoped to have electricity restored by 8 p.m.

“We have four transformers that are out,” Frutos-Sanchez said, “and we have an oil spill.”

In cases involving an oil spill, Edison is required to notify the California Pubic Utilities Commission, she said.

“An oil spill requires a whole new set of people to come out and do the cleanup before Edison crews can begin working,” she said.

The woman driving the SUV was not injured, Los Angeles County Fire Department officials said.
