Family Promise of the Santa Clarita Valley, a nonprofit organization serving local homeless families, is looking for volunteers to assist with its biggest fundraising event of the year: Box City.

The event, to be held Sept. 27, raises awareness about and compassion for homelessness in the local community as participants spend one night in a cardboard box at Bridgeport Park.

“Family Promise relies on the time and talent of local residents to pull together this fun and heart-warming event,” said Laurie Ender, president of the Family Promise Board of Directors. Some of the volunteer opportunities available include:

- Helping with the planning committee

- Distributing posters and flyers

- Becoming an ambassador to speak to community groups and encourage involvement.

- Event set-up and tear-down.

Youth volunteers can receive service credit for participating, said Dee Dee Jacobson, volunteer coordinator for Box City. Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer can contact Jacobson at

Established in 2011, Family Promise of the Santa Clarita Valley offers shelter, meals and support services to families without homes.
