A 45-year-old Los Angeles Police Department officer died at a hospital Saturday — two days after suffering what authorities said was a brain aneurysm while driving off-duty in her hometown of Valencia.

Officer Kathleen Talbot was pronounced dead at 10:46 a.m. Saturday at an undisclosed hospital, said Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office Investigator Joyce Kato.

The cause of death will be investigated and determined by her office, Kato said.

Lt. Rob Hahnlein of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station said Talbot apparently “suffered a brain aneurysm while driving” Thursday morning on Valencia Boulevard near College of the Canyons.

Talbot’s car was then involved in a solo vehicle crash, he said.

Officers with LAPD media relations were not available to comment Saturday afternoon, though some in the department took to Twitter to express their sadness on hearing the news.

“It is with heavy hearts that we announce #LAPD Rampart Police Officer III, K. Talbot #31941 has passed away,” reads a post on the LAPD Rampart Twitter page.

A post Saturday on the Twitter account for LAPD Chief Charlie Beck reads, “Hearts and prayers go out to the Talbot Family. You will be missed.”

In 2011 Talbot, who was then working at the LAPD’s Rampart Division, was honored along with Sgt. Scarlett Nuño and Officer Carlos Jimenez for saving the life of a suicidal arrestee “who had taken a drawstring from his sweater, wrapped it around his neck and attached the other end to a hand rail adjacent to the cell’s toilet and sink,” according to The Beat, an LAPD publication.

“Officer Talbot took great care in inserting the blade of her knife between the ligature and his neck” to free the arrestee, the newsletter said.

For her actions, Talbot and the other three officers were honored at an LAPD annual recognition ceremony.
