Firefighters from both the county and the U.S. Forest Service jumped on a small brush fire north of Castaic Thursday, a spokesman for the U.S. Forest Service said.

The brush fire was reported shortly after 3:30 a.m. near the northbound lanes of Interstate 5 around Templin Highway, said John D. Wagner, spokesman for the Angeles National Forest.

“This was called the Junction Fire; it burned 1.12 acres,” he said.

California Highway Patrol officers shut down the right-hand lane on the northbound interstate to accommodate firefighting efforts.

Before it was doused, the fire flared up in eight spots near the interstate. It was extinguished within an hour of being reported.
