About 300 professional and privateer remote control car drivers are expected to visit the Santa Clarita Valley this weekend for the 17th annual Hot Rod Hobbies and Raceways Offroad Shootout.

Rookies to professionals, including some of the best in the world, will come from around the United States and the world to race at the national event at the Hot Rod Hobbies and Raceways track off of Railroad Avenue this Saturday and Sunday.

The event is open to the public and free for spectators, according to Jimmy Babcock, former professional RC driver and Hot Rod Hobbies owner.

It’s “just like NASCAR but a little bit shrunk down version,” he said.

Though the cars may be small, the competition isn’t.

“They get pretty serious,” Babcock said.

Drivers will be running qualifying races on Saturday. To qualify for the finals on Sunday, drivers must complete as many laps as they can within five minutes. The top 20 in each class move on.

Cody Turner, a professional RC driver from Palmdale, said he will enjoy the home-turf advantage.

“It feels more comfortable,” he said. Turner races at Hot Rod Hobbies’ track on Tuesday evenings. Hot Rod Hobbies holds three races per week — on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday nights — which are open to drivers of all levels.

The Shootout is Santa Clarita’s biggest annual RC racing event, though this year competition will take place over two days instead of three as in previous years.

Babcock said the move to a Saturday-Sunday competition only will allow more people to participate without fear of missing work.

I stopped by there one weekend when I was on my bike ride. It's actually pretty fun watching the races and kids love it.

The RC track is one of the really nice things about this town. Great atmosphere and a part of down you probably never knew existed.
