A Newhall eye doctor never saw it coming.

More than $2,000 in sunglasses and eye wear were stolen from his business by a thief who cut a hole in the wall to get in, according to a Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station report.

Some time shortly before 2:30 a.m. on July 7, deputies with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station responded to a burglary alarm at Corbin Optometry on Lyons Avenue, responding deputies wrote in their report.

When deputies arrived, they found a 3-by-2-foot hole cut in a wall between the optometry office and a sprinkler room.

“As I opened the door, I could see a large hole had been cut in the drywall on the north wall ofthe room,” the deputy wrote. “Large pieces of drywall lay in a pile on the floor.”

“Several display cases had been opened and some of the display prescription and sunglasses had been taken,” he wrote.

Deputies watched video surveillance of the break-in.

“I observed an unknown person wearing a red hooded sweatshirt and black gloves enter the location from the hole cut in the back office wall,” the deputy wrote. “The suspect picked up a small trash can from a nearby exam room, then immediately began to open display cases on east and west walls.

“It appeared that the suspect was choosing specific items,” he wrote. “The thief kept his head down and covered his face with his hand.”

This seems like an awful lot of work for something that could only be fenced for a few hundred dollars, but then some crime studies have calculated the earnings from burglary and other property crimes at about half the minimum wage when including time spent incarcerated.

"time spent incarcerated"

I think it's cute that you think this person will spend 1 hour in jail over this.
