Minimum wage to increase to $9 on July 1

California’s minimum wage rises from $8 per hour to $9 per hour effective July 1.

The change is being greeted by differing reactions depending on whether you are a worker or an employer.

Although minimum wage workers will see an increase in pay, some businesses may have to lay off workers and make other operational changes if they can’t afford the increase, according to those against the wage hike.

The minimum wage in California is scheduled to rise again to $10 per hour on Jan. 1, 2016.

With this increase, California will surpass Washington for the highest minimum wage in the country.

“When you raise the price of employment, guess what happens? You get less of it,” House Speaker John Boehner said on Feb. 14. “Why do we want to make it harder for small employers to hire people?”

This minimum wage bump will be the largest in California’s history, with the last increase being 50 cents in 2008 according to the Department of Industrial Relations.   

“We have a lot of evidence on what happens when you raise the minimum wage,” economist Paul Krugman told The New York Times. “And the evidence is overwhelmingly positive: Hiking the minimum wage has little or no adverse effect on employment while significantly increasing workers’ earnings,”

There are some employees who are exempt from the minimum wage law, such as outside salespersons, individuals who are the parent, spouse, or child of the employer, and apprentices employed under the State Division of Apprenticeship Standards.

My son receives minimum wage, but this is not the answer to the problem. We need better jobs and people to learn skills, not stay stuck in a job that was mean't to be temporary. This will clog up the entry work force for young people in high school and coming out of high school, where there will be very few jobs available, because people will be getting too high of a minimum wage for work that doesn't require special skills. Usually, you get paid more when you provide skills and products that are unique or rare. Minimum wage jobs were set up originally to be temporary and experience building not a permanent family providing job. Too high of a minimum wage will kill our economy. Employers will hire fewer workers and instead hire highly skilled people to do more work than normal.

Bigthan7777: Truth. Don't know how people working minimum wage jobs expect to support a family. We all did these jobs as teens. I think I was making $3.25 an hour when I worked at Baskin Robbins.

What this will do is raise the cost on everything. Does anybody think that the employers are going to just sit and absorb the loss??

A single person, claiming 1, making $8.00 an hr. working 40 hours nets a check of $266..........same person making $9.00 will net $295 a week. To the worker a take home increase of $29 seems like a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow, unfortunately they don't understand that this is an attempt to hold them back from reaching for the stars and getting out of the minimum wage rut and finding a trade, profession whatever that not only financially helps them out, but the improvement in their own self esteem will grown by leaps and bounds.

Ever read "Fast Food Nation" those kids working at the fast food places, they aren't learning a thing.........

There are few skilled trades to graduate to these days. A service industry economy is a minimum wage economy.
