A Newhall man was sentenced to more than a decade in state prison after pleading no contest this week to a charge of attempted murder.

Deputies from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station and paramedics responded in April to the 24200 block of Pine Street in Newhall for reports of assault with a deadly weapon.

A Newhall woman, whose identity was not released, was injured and taken to the hospital with lacerations to her head and neck.

As a result, deputies arrested another Newhall resident, Juan Francisco Lopez, on suspicion of attempted murder.

Lopez pleaded no contest Wednesday to one count of attempted murder, according to Shiara Dávila-Morales, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office.

He was sentenced to 15 years in state prison, Dávila-Morales said.
