Five teenage girls injured in a late-night crash last weekend, including a Canyon High School sophomore who remains in the hospital in intensive care, continue to improve, according to a spokeswoman for the William S. Hart Union High School District.

Kelly Watson, 15, who was reported to have suffered head injuries in the Saturday crash, remains in the intensive care unit of an undisclosed hospital.

“Kelly remains in ICU but is recovering,” District spokeswoman Gail Pinsker said Wednesday. “The family is encouraged with her progress.”

Five injured girls, all students at local high schools, were in a Honda Accord that crashed into a light standard on Newhall Ranch Road late Saturday night.

Three occupants of the car, all Canyon High School students, are at home and recuperating after the crash and are expected to make a full recovery, according to Pinsker. One student suffered a broken wrist but was released from the hospital soon after the incident. Another student is sore and recovering from abrasions at home.

Another student is at home and healing, but Pinsker did not have any information on the extent of her injuries.

No information has been released regarding the identity and condition of a fifth occupant of the car — a passenger described only as a student of the charter school Opportunities for Learning.

A traffic investigator with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station told The Signal Tuesday he is waiting for the initial collision report being prepared by deputies who responded to the crash.

At least two girls were thrown from the vehicle on impact, Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station officials said Sunday. Four were taken to area hospitals.

The driver was a Canyon High junior and the rest of the students were sophomores.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the girls and families of this accident, and we hope for a full recovery for all of them,” Pinsker said earlier in the week.
