Santa Clarita City Council OK's trash fee hike

New rate for single-family homes in Santa Clarita to move to $21.08, an 89-cent increase

Santa Clarita City Council members voted Tuesday night to approve rate increases for trash-collection services within the city.

“The city of Santa Clarita’s residential and commercial solid waste services are provided by Waste Management and Burrtec Waste Industries, Inc.,” reads the agenda item on the topic. “Per the approved franchise agreements, franchised solid waste haulers may submit a request for a rate adjustment by April 1 for consideration.”

The new, single-family monthly rate will move to $21.08, an 89-cent increase over current rates, according to officials.

The new rates are set to go into effect July 1.

The City Council approved a similar increase in May 2013, boosting the rates 83 cents per month for a single-family home, bringing the monthly rate to $20.19 at that point.

“Similar collection service in the unincorporated area of the Santa Clarita Valley is proposed to be $22.51 as of July 1, 2014,” the agenda item reads.

At least this is one utility that I like. They make paying them over the phone easy, unlike the water Co. They have a unlimited "spring cleanup pickup" so you can clean out your garage. Plus two bulky pick ups a year.
And their customer service is very nice (kudos to Rosalyn).

Yippee, another rate increase. Tell me again how inflation is only 2%. So in the last 12 months the cost of hauling trash has gone up 9%.

I hate this state.....

Vtown123: Posted: May 28, 2014 10:18 a.m.

If you hate it, why are you still here?

Unreal: Posted: May 28, 2014 10:33 a.m.

Well, not really a tax increase is it? I think I pay it directly to the trash company like now right?

debatenohate: Posted: May 28, 2014 11:49 a.m.

Does it cost the company less money to come get a smaller trash bin? Ours is never full. Wish there was a way to pay less for a smaller bin (even smaller than the small one they have), but I guess it wouldn't matter if it costs them the same amount to come pick it up and dump it.

Next meeting the city will consider the #1 & #2 tax. $0.10 for #1; $0.25 for #2, and a $0.15 up charge if you don't wash your hands. "Hand washing" cameras will be installed in all bathrooms within city limits.

lars2: Posted: May 28, 2014 12:40 p.m.

@17trillion, use math much? The trash rates went up 4.43%. Where did you get 9% from?

lars2: Posted: May 28, 2014 12:43 p.m.

@debatenohate The trash trucks cost the same to visit you whether you have less trash or more. (Labor and fuel) Landfill fees are less due to the weight. I guess the haulers could charge by weight. That would be a real incentive to not waste.

Unreal: Posted: May 28, 2014 12:51 p.m.

KimChiPark: Um, I hope most people are washing their hands after using the restroom. If not they should be shot not taxed.

missyJk: Posted: May 28, 2014 4:45 p.m.

in answer to someones question yes i believe they have a smaller trash bin for less money...also if you pay 11 months upfront you get one month free i have been doing that for years..since we are a recycling city i am sure some of the recycling helps offset the cost. I for one think its one of the few services that are a fair rate...with that said lets hope next year they dont make it 3 years in a row increase

missyJk: Posted: May 28, 2014 4:47 p.m.

LOL @ hand washing whether they do or not i still open public bathroom doors with a paper towel one that i dried my hands on so its not further waste

stray: Posted: May 28, 2014 4:55 p.m.

Also, I believe if you are a senior citizen over a certain age, they will give you a reduced service charge. I don't know if both Waste Mgmt and Burrtec offer it, but my great grandparents took advantage of it. But, they are now deceased.

Vtown123: Posted: May 29, 2014 12:06 a.m.

I wish we paid per pound. Only then would people take recycling seriously.

ricketzz: Posted: May 29, 2014 7:14 a.m.

Gross. I never touch anything in a public restroom. If it ain't got infrared faucets, soap dispenser, I still haven't touched anything when I walk out. I #2 at home.

Anybody ever use the bathroom downstairs at the Beverly Hilton? Under the ballroom? Wowsers!

17trillion: Posted: May 29, 2014 8:16 a.m.

Vtown, it's really none of your business, but needless to say if I could leave today I would. One day a few years from now, I will leave this state and all you liberal morons can kiss my butt.

Lars, yes I use math much! It went from $20.19 to $22.51 over two rate increases in a short period of time. Read much?

KimChiPark: Posted: May 29, 2014 10:54 a.m.

When 17twerp leaves the state, I will pay the $0.25 #2 tax on thate movement

17trillion: Posted: May 29, 2014 12:41 p.m.

Thanks spicy fermented Korean cabbage dish, I will add that to the $20,000.00 per year or so that I'll save. I would call that a win/win. By the way, I thought Koreans were smart? The ones I know sure are, what happened to you?

KimChiPark: Posted: May 29, 2014 1:47 p.m.

You no make fun of my accent, you duece bag!

17trillion: Posted: May 29, 2014 2:24 p.m.

No, no, no...me love you long time! On second thought I think I have the wrong country on that one, but no matter.

Actually spicy fermented Korean cabbage dish I was making fun of your spelling and tortured syntax.

stray: Posted: May 29, 2014 2:38 p.m.

You are correct 17, the Park name is typically Korean. I have two Korean friends with that last name.

lars2: Posted: May 29, 2014 7:35 p.m.

@17trillion I hate to break up the silliness of KCP, but $20.19 to $21.08 is for the City. The $22.51 is for the County. That is why the article says "unincorporated Santa Clarita Valley" Only one increase for each. I'll take an apology now.

17trillion: Posted: May 30, 2014 8:27 a.m.

I got your apology lars. It's sitting right next to my ring finger.

So, I got the gist of the story wrong about where the increase came from and who got one and you attacked my math skills even though my math was correct but my base assumption wasn't. How about my apology for the lame attack on my math skills?

SReilly12: Posted: May 30, 2014 11:35 a.m.

@MissyJK - Thank you ever so much for the tip about paying for the full year. Normally I pay my small bills (gardener, pest control and trash) every quarter because I hate dealing with all these little bills each month. Didn't know I could pay the trash ahead and get a free month.......time to take advantage of this!!! Thanks again :)

missyJk: Posted: May 31, 2014 12:23 a.m.

@SReilly12 i call them and pay it with credit card, sometimes they make a mistake and forget to adjust that 12th month, but when you call they take care of it right away..

SReilly12: Posted: May 31, 2014 7:15 a.m.

missyJK: thanks again!

KimChiPark: Posted: May 31, 2014 7:50 a.m.
