Investigators with the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Department have identified the man whose body was found inside a burning Newhall apartment last month as 61-year-old Clyde Wayne Henderson, a spokeswoman said.

For about two weeks, investigators tried to determine the identity of a man they referred to only as “John Doe #96.”

An autopsy was done on his body, however, investigators are still trying to figure out how he died.

“The cause and manner of death has been deferred,” Coroner Investigator Betsy Magdaleno told The Signal Sunday.

The case is being investigated by Detective Kenneth Clark of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau.

On April 28, shortly before 11:30 p.m., firefighters with the Los Angeles County Fire Department and deputies with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station were dispatched to the 26700 block of North Oak Crossing Road in Newhall on reports of an apartment fire.

Firefighters arriving at the single-story apartment complex found smoke and fire showing from the dwelling, said Fire Department Inspector Melanie Flores at the time of the fire.

Flores said the apartment was in “extreme pack rat conditions.”
