A group of riders from Cub Scout Pack 527 of Valencia join more than 100 bike riders at the start of the Hit The Trail Community Bike Ride event held at Bridgeport Park in Valencia to celebrate Bike Safety Month on Saturday. The event also readies residents for the upcoming Amgen Tour of California, coming to the SCV from May 16-17.

Dozens of community members turned out Saturday for a community bike ride to not only promote the upcoming Amgen Tour of California, but give attendees a look at Santa Clarita’s trail system, as well.

The “Hit the Trail” community bike ride was held Saturday morning at Bridgeport Park and attracted young and old alike to take a ride down some of the city’s trails.

Attendees ranged from seasoned riders in athletic gear to more casual riders in shorts and T-shirts.

Bikes ran the gamut as well, from professional-level rides to colorful children’s bikes adorned with baskets.

The focus of the event is to provide a family activity for Santa Clarita community members, as well as draw attention to both the upcoming tour and the city’s existing amenities, according to city spokesman Evan Thomason.

“It’s really to enjoy time with your friends and community members, your neighbors, your family and celebrate our more than 70 miles of off-street trails that we have here in Santa Clarita,” Thomason said.

An estimated 100-plus riders attended Saturday’s event.

The event also included bike tune-ups and tricycle races, much to the delight of young and old attendees alike.

Also on hand at Saturday’s event was information about the upcoming Amgen Tour of California stage bicycle race, which will roll into the Santa Clarita Valley on Friday and Saturday.

The city is hosting two stage starts for the tour this year, one of which will start in Newhall on Friday, May 16, and the second in Valencia on Saturday, May 17.
