County health officials discovered a rabid bat in the Santa Clarita Valley last month, meaning two of the three found countywide so far this year have been in the SCV.

The latest bat was found in Newhall in April, according to a report from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, and was “seen during the day hanging on an outside wall at a residence.”

“It flew away and was later found on the ground,” the report states.

This marks the first time in two months that health officials have found a rabid bat in Los Angeles County. In February one was found dead in a swimming pool in Agua Dulce, and another was found by a cat in a backyard in Los Angeles.

The Santa Clarita Valley is typically home to the lion’s share of confirmed rabid bat cases in Los Angeles County. Last year, for instance, 14 of the 34 rabid bats found in Los Angeles County were located in the Santa Clarita Valley.

The majority of those were found later in the year, largely from May to August, but two were found locally in October.
Health officials say the reason for the valley’s high proportion of rabid bat cases is the area’s high bat population.

A collaborative effort to be sure...I was wondering if the bats around here have a name, perhaps a scientific designation or something beyond "bat". Why are there a lot of bats? What is their daytime location? Do streetlights attract bats? Why?

I bet my neighbor who works for LA County Parks could tell you.
