An investigation into the death of a young Las Vegas man Tuesday on the tracks near the Newhall Metrolink station indicate he deliberately ran into the path of the oncoming commuter train, a sheriff’s homicide detective said Thursday.

“He ran from the platform onto the tracks and then head-on into the train,” said Detective Adan Torres of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau.

The man has been identified as 23-year-old Joe Miller of Las Vegas, according to an official from the county Coroner’s Office.

Although the incident sounds like a clear-cut case of suicide, Torres said, a final determination would not be made on the manner of death until the county Coroner’s Office finishes its own investigation, including an autopsy.

Metrolink train No. 209 bound for Via Princessa collided with the man as it approached the Newhall station about 2:45 p.m. Tuesday. The man was declared dead at the scene.
