Newhall District raises money for musical instruments

The Newhall School District, with the help of the Henry Mayo Newhall Foundation, has raised more than $22,000 to fund instrument purchases for its music program, according to officials.

The Newhall Foundation, which is not related to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, issued a challenge grant to the district in December, pledging to donate $10,000 for the district’s musical pursuits if the district was able to raise the same amount.

The district did just that — and then some, raising more than $12,600, according to officials.

“We weren’t surprised,” said Brian Walters, the president of the Newhall district governing board. “But we are really grateful.”

With the foundation’s match, that means the district will be able to put more than $22,000 toward the purchase of new instruments for its music program.

Price estimates for student instruments range from $200 for a violin, $230 for brass and woodwind instruments and about $450 for cellos.

Because of the costs, some parents cannot afford to buy or rent instruments of their own.

The money raised will allow the district to purchase approximately 90 new instruments.

“It was a win for all those involved, especially for the students,” Walters said.

The district currently owns about 500 instruments and about 450 are typically available for use by students at any one time, according to a news release from the Newhall district.

The Newhall district has been able to largely preserve its music program even while enduring budget cuts during the recession.

Officials say that is because keeping the music program intact is a priority of both the district’s administration and board.

Fundraising from private sources, along with the Music Makers PTA, also plays a major role, according to officials.

Congratulations to the Newhall School District, to the parents, and to the Music Makers PTA for making this match. Incredible!
