A California man who stabbed a Valencia man to death in New Mexico 19 months ago has been found guilty of involuntary manslaughter, the prosecutor in the case told The Signal Wednesday.

Chip Adam Fox, 35, of San Luis Obispo, was arrested in August 2012 by police in Clovis County on suspicion of killing his friend Kevin Reardon, also 35, of Valencia, during an argument.

In a verdict handed down by a jury late Wednesday afternoon, Fox was found guilty of manslaughter and of soliciting to commit tampering with evidence, said Assistant District Attorney Laura Sammons of the Clovis County District Attorney’s office.

“The tampering charge was in relation to a phone call made from prison to another party asked to remove evidence,” Sammons said.

Fox was originally charged with second degree murder. He was also initially charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, but that particular charge was dismissed within two weeks of his arrest, court papers show.

Reardon and Fox, who were reportedly together on a visit to Fox’s relative’s house on Aug. 16, 2012, got into a fight that night outside the home of Fox’s aunt in a South Clovis trailer park, said Clovis Police Capt. Patrick Whitney.

Reardon was rushed to Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis, four miles away, and later transferred to a trauma hospital in Lubbock, Texas, where he died from his injuries on Aug. 17.

“The stabbing occurred ... during a confrontation that erupted between the two men,” Whitney said in a media release issued at the time of the arrest.

According to court records published in the Clovis News Journal, Fox told an officer that his friend Reardon

“freaked out” after huffing Dust-Off dust cleaner and ran into the knife Fox held.

Huffing involves inhaling a substance for the purpose of getting high.

Reardon, who died about six hours after the stabbing, told an officer he was verbally abusing Fox and Fox stabbed him in the stomach, according to the Clovis News Journal.

Tiffany Pryor, Fox’s girlfriend, told police she had seen Reardon huffing Dust-Off two to three times during their vacation and job-hunting trip to South Dakota and Austin, Texas, before the trio traveled to Clovis while returning to San Luis Obispo.

Police retrieved the knife thought to be used in the stabbing at a neighbor’s residence, the newspaper said.
Fox is being held at the Curry County jail on a $200,000 bond.

They both were too old for this type of behavior. Too bad the one Valencia resident never got the chance to really grow up. --edited.
