SANTA CLARITA - The football stadiums at Canyon and Valencia high schools will receive new turf in time for the fall season. and Saugus High School will sport two new tennis courts, Hart district school board members decided this week.

The William S. Hart Union High School District board voted Wednesday night to solicit bids from contractors for the re-turfing projects at Canyon and Valencia. Once the contractor and construction budget have been approved, work will begin on both projects.

“Both fields, they are not in the greatest condition at this moment, and we want to keep our students and the community that utilizes them safe,” said Gail Pinsker, spokeswoman for the district.

Board members approved a proposal to prepare design and construction documents for the field projects during a board meeting on Sept. 11. The construction documents for the project have been completed and are ready to be priced by contractors.

Part of the re-turfing proposals include improving drainage for both fields, Pinsker said.

The goal is to start work on both projects in early May and have them completed by the fall semester, according to board documents.

The stadiums at Canyon and Valencia play host to Foothill League football games throughout the season. District football teams also play periodically at College of the Canyons.

In addition, Saugus High School will get two new tennis courts under a board vote to approve design and bid document preparation for a tennis court expansion.

The new courts will bring Saugus up to six courts, a requirement for hosting California Interscholastic Federation tournaments.

A similar project has also been approved for Hart High School. The other comprehensive high schools in the Hart district already have six tennis courts.

And yet I get a flier in the mail asking to rank what is more important, fixing leaky roofs or broken AC units. But football fields and tennis courts are more important I guess. And we don't even have a fleet of school busses to pay for and maintain. Where's all the money going?

The state-of-the-art synthetic turf was installed at both Hart and Valencia not that long ago at a cost of about $1,000,000 apiece. They already need to be replaced?? For real??

Didn't we just redo the field at Canyon? Wasn't there a heat problem or something? There is money to burn in this town, yet no trails on the East End...
