The skies may have been clear and the sun may have been bright, but Saturday was still a snow day at the Santa Clarita Valley Family YMCA.

Tons of snow were delivered to the YMCA in Valencia as part of the Santa Clarita Valley branch’s open house event.

Dozens of attendees, young and old alike, frolicked in the wintery offering, making snow angels and sledding down a ramp.

Nearby, a snowman stood higher than many of the kids who helped build it.

Lori Rivas and her son, Eli, engaged in a series of pitched snowball fights to mark one of the few times the pair has had the opportunity to play in the snow.

“It’s wonderful and nice that they did this,” Rivas said before hastily ducking to avoid a flying snowball.

The event serves as both a day to have fun and a day to spread the word about the programs available at the YMCA, according to Gwen Bagley, the executive director of the Santa Clarita Valley Family YMCA.

Along with snow, the event also included crafts, as well as hot chocolate and snow cones.

“It’s a combination day,” Bagley said Saturday. “One is just for the kids and families to have fun in the snow in sunny California and the second is to give families the opportunity to learn more about the YMCA and the programs we have to offer.”

Those programs include childcare services, a wellness center from families and the traditional swim lessons.

“You name it, we have it,” Bagley said.

Bagley said the event has been held for the past several years and the response from the community has been positive.

“It’s just a way for us to give back and provide families a way to connect with each other,” she said.

The Santa Clarita Valley Family YMCA is located at 26147 McBean Parkway in Valencia. For more information, visit www.ymcala.org/scv or call 661-253-3593.

There is a water shortage. I'm thinking a snow day when its 85 is stupid. I not a winter swim in their pool.
