Letter: Enough with the taxes already

The California Board of Equalization has just approved a 9.7 percent increase in the excise tax on gasoline, raising the total excise tax to 39.5 cents per gallon. This added to all the other taxes on gasoline sales will have us paying over 70 cents per gallon in tax. On top of this we pay license fees on our vehicles which are a tax as well and like many people I thought all of this money was for roads.

The roads in California are crumbling by the day and now the state wants to charge us for using car pool lanes on the I-5. To pay to use the car-pool lanes is another tax for the privilege of driving to and from the Santa Clarita Valley. When is it going to stop; when is “Sacramento” going to stop bilking us out of our hard earned money? This tax increase is punitive to say the least since we have already paid for our roads and freeways over and over. Instead of using gasoline taxes for road construction and maintenance “Sacramento” has siphoned it off for feel-good projects and exorbitant salaries for career politicians who bounce from one paying job to another as they get termed out.

I hope the people of the Santa Clarita Valley raise their voices in opposition to this “highway robbery” and let the politicians know: enough is enough; you got one shot at our wallets and that is it.

Politicians and bureaucrats, brazen critters aren't they?

Maybe they know we can't vote them out when enough people are on the dole.

ricketzz: Posted: March 12, 2013 9:48 a.m.

Does your dependency class include "defense" contractors?

ohhyaa: Posted: March 12, 2013 11:06 a.m.

Dealing with all of the additional taxes, fees and general price increases is like playing a game of dodge ball. First one ball is throw, then a second, a third. How many balls can I catch before I'm eliminated from the game? How long can this over taxation go on? One generation? Two? At our current pace of taxation and fees how much will anyone have left to pay for college, enjoy life, to take a vacation, to own a home?

Indy: Posted: March 12, 2013 11:25 a.m.

LTE writer: you got one shot at our wallets and that is it.

Indy: It’s understandable that people writer these letters and it indicates a failure of our state legislature to properly ‘educate’ voters as to why they are paying taxes.

It would be helpful if or own two legislators, Knight and Wilk, addressed such issues on their websites and give us an explanation for the taxes.

And if people say want to have more traffic and congestion, then great.

But that trade off isn’t mentioned by the writer just the crying about having to pay for same.

It’s good to keep in mind that as the state as surpassed some 35 million residents, that much of the infrastructure built in the 50s and 60s needs to be expanded.

Yet, the decline of service levels like traffic congestion is left in the darkness over having to pay for same.

Taxing gasoline is reasonable since the roads are used by people that drive.

In any event, it would be better leadership to get our legislators to actually address the topics such as this beyond using their ideology/folklore recitals that would never suffice in the ‘boardroom’ if you will.

OldReliable: Posted: March 12, 2013 11:37 a.m.

Hey WIndy, if more taxation is reasonable then why don't you and your like minded liberals voluntarily send more $$ to the State & Feds?

chico: Posted: March 12, 2013 11:58 a.m.

There is always a reason and an explanation for more tax and regulation- smart people can tell you.

In the mean time, we should shut up and pay for our indulgence - and feel stupid for failing to see the superiority of their ideas.

It's for our own good to pay more - smart people that make our arrangements know that.

There is no other way.

Capiche?

This one takes the cake - Mayor Bloomberg, proud of increasing the fine for spitting in a subway to $300, just found out that vomiting is free.

Oh, so the free riding moocher argument? I bet you are the guy when watching football at someone's house suddenly disappears into the bathroom when the pizza arrives!

LADIMAS: Posted: March 12, 2013 2:14 p.m.

Always complaining about more taxes !!
Taxes though the years have given us a better way of life !!
Taxes have kept us safe, made our roads better, helped the Educational Dept
in providing better teachers, helped to establish better ways for the disabled, better ways for children with special needs, better health facilities, better doctors, better technology, etc etc.
Having everyone paying their "FAIR" share of taxes from the middle class to the affluent would help matters.
Please note that I said "FAIR SHARE"= "no more and no less" just "FAIR"

affluent will

Dumbounded: Posted: March 12, 2013 2:38 p.m.

"helped the Educational Dept
in providing better teachers"

You must of missed some of that help. I wonder if you know that reading your tortured writing and syntax gives me a headache. Do you realize that most of your post doesn't even contain what one would call valid sentences?

I'm betting you don't pay a penny in federal taxes!

ohhyaa: Posted: March 12, 2013 3:28 p.m.

@LADIMAS Goodness gracious me (old people talk). You must be mistaken believing that somehow taxes have provided BETTER doctors. Please quantify how a Doctor become BETTER because of the government collecting taxes.

Do I need to get on line and pull up the most current IRS statistical charts that show how many tax DOLLARS (not talking about percentages) are paid by the top 50% of tax payers versus the 0% to 49% of tax payers?

Golly (more old people talk), some people just don't understand or want to believe the facts versus the fiction.

ohhyaa: Posted: March 12, 2013 3:35 p.m.

@LADIMAS. Our country would be a much better place if you and your like minded friends cancelled your AARP supplemental medical insurance and donated the equalivent monies to the charity of your choice.

That way you can truly understand the changes, inspired by your beloved Barack, and search for one of the BETTER Doctors, that you believe are standing in line to sign up medicare patients ('cuz our taxes are so high).

Chris_S: Posted: March 12, 2013 4:43 p.m.

The reason State Tax on fuel is so high is due to the fact we don't see a 1 for 1 return from the Federal Gov't. States like Texas get more than they pay in, just as Arizona and Nevada do. If the Fed ever made it a 1 for 1 on gas tax dollars, most States outside California could not afford their roads.

Dumbounded: Posted: March 12, 2013 5:33 p.m.

"The reason State Tax on fuel is so high is due to the fact we don't see a 1 for 1 return from the Federal Gov't."

What nonsense. Using this logic we should have the best roads in the country since we pay the highest in taxes, but of course we don't and the reason is because Texas gets more money than we do per capita? Classic low information voter........

Chris_S: Posted: March 12, 2013 5:56 p.m.

Low information? So if you give 100, and you get 67 back, that is a deficit. We now get to start making up for the deficit with a higher State Tax. Maybe I should ask the Contractors who resurface and build our roads if they want to follow the Feds lead, we will pay them $67 for $100 we owe them. We don't have the best roads, you missed the point, we pay more than gets returned.

LADIMAS: Posted: March 12, 2013 6:06 p.m.

DD, please don't read my post !!! I'm the one that gets the headache knowing
that your are reading my post and that you are going to come up with you
inane post!! Again demeaning posting !!!!
I'm living a good life where I don't pay taxes but you do!!
Thanks for your taxes so I can live a better life !!!!

ohhyaa, "Our country would be a much better place if your mindless posts would
not be posted !! Again a one dimensional post regarding the Doctors only !!
Did you read the other benefits that taxes pay for ??????
By the way Obama is beloved and he is the" Messiah"
Old people are very nice and very special ! Their generation got you a better way of life !!
Golly "some people just LIKE YOU don't understand or want to believe the facts versus the fiction." "Golly Gee"

ohhyaa: Posted: March 12, 2013 6:23 p.m.

Dear LADIMAS aka forever known as MAME, I focused my post on the item of most concern to me, you claiming that doctors are BETTER because we pay a lot of TAXES. I could have addressed each of your other hairbrained claims individually, but in the past you have been unwilling to quantify your data, so why would I bother. You brag about not paying any taxes... My elderly mother doesn't pay taxes either. She does pay a hell of a lot for her medical prescriptions though. How's that going for you Lois? It's pretty sick that you feel that Obama is the Messiah. How do you rank Hitler and his Nazi thugs? Love them too?

OldReliable: Posted: March 12, 2013 7:06 p.m.

Hey Tim Myers, in my circle of friends we take turns hosting events such as important football games. There is no free ride unless you're an illegal alien or a sloucher receiving entitlements.

Geez, what a goofy comment brother Myers! Grow up...

bassmnsc1: Posted: March 12, 2013 9:18 p.m.

Greetings from Nevada where we dont get ripped off by our government. Our costs are low.Gas is 50 cent less,Rent is cheaper, car registration is half of yours,DMV fees are less,Groceries are about the same, and utilities are cheaper. The taxes you are paying are not ok.Its a case of poor government and lousy politicians getting bought off by special interest

LADIMAS: Posted: March 12, 2013 11:28 p.m.

ohhyaa, again you fell right into my trap of humor !!
Keep your post coming I have the best time adding humor to them, !!
To bad you can't take a joke and realize that humor has been interjected
into the posts!!

"How do you rank Hitler and his Nazi thugs?"
A very uncalled for and mean spirited question !!!

I don't pay federal taxes or state taxes I usually get a refund. $$$$$$$$$$
I happen to have a very good accounted $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I have a great prescription medical plan for your Mother !!!!!!
My prescription medical plan is going just great !!!
Only a $ 5.00 copay for every RX $$$$$$$$$$$$$

Oh by the way President Obama is the "Messiah" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now if you have any more question I will be happy to answer them ??????????

I don't pay federal taxes or state taxes I usually get a refund. $$$$$$$$$$

Nazis? Godwin's law has now been proven.

OldReliable: Posted: March 13, 2013 10:25 a.m.

Is LadiLois losing it... bizarre comments...

Indy: Posted: March 13, 2013 11:16 a.m.

bassmnsc1,

What percentage of our government is funded by the taxes on casinos?

And if you see such great benefit of living there, why aren't you moving there?

Dumbounded: Posted: March 13, 2013 11:47 a.m.

Chris, you are aware that the vast majority of roads thoughout this country are funded by the state or local government, right? So, using your logic, we pay more than we get back from the fed. Assuming there is nothing Boxer, Feinstein, Pelosi, and company can do to fix this, the only solution is to raise taxes on the citizens of the state?

Lois, perhaps you should see a doctor about the meds you're taking?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

philellis: Posted: March 13, 2013 2:48 p.m.

Or maybe she can share some with the rest of us.

ricketzz: Posted: March 14, 2013 10:07 a.m.

Nevada is radioactive. Anything downwind from Barstow is radioactive. (We nuked ourselves way more than we nuked Japan).
