Letters: Obama not a socialist

In a Feb. 22 Letter to the Editor in The Signal, Brian Baker claims that President Obama is a “socialist.”

We hear this claim about Mr. Obama over and over again from rightwingers.

As a socialist myself, I can assure Mr. Baker that Barack Obama is no socialist.

If Mr. Baker was privy to the feelings of the more liberal end of the Democratic Party, he would be aware that we are not all that happy with the president’s actions on a whole host of matters.

However, he is so far preferable to the horrible Republican alternatives available these days that we naturally support him.

Since my only practical choice is to support the Democratic Party I do so, and I hope to nudge it further to the left every chance I get.

Mr. Obama is a moderate liberal at best and far, far from being a socialist by any but the most conservative standards.

Mr. Baker and his cohorts need to learn more about “socialism” before they throw the term around so loosely.

The LTE is all over the board...bags on Brian for not being privy to the feelings of the liberal end of the Democrat party,

then flips to use 'conservative standards' in some sort of analysis ...all in the same piece.

Two faced?... Or does this guy have a clouded mind with so much conflict from the knowledge of BOTH conservative standands and liberal feelings.

Do you know how smart you have to be to know BOTH?

Some people complain of headaches when they think of both conservative standards and liberal feelings, but when they stop thinking of liberal feelings, the headaches went away.

I'm tired. I'm tired of the practical choice being one or the other; if we all didn't say that, it wouldn't be (that is of course if you believe we have any real input into the system). It's like saying, there will never be peace. If you stop saying that, all of us, maybe we'd have a damn chance at it.

Obama is not a socialist...and he's also a moderate. Right. Sorry dude but if it quacks like a duck, swims like a duck, flies like a duck, and waddles like a duck...it's probably a duck.

I've always figured socialists were the guys that couldn't get anywhere on their own so they needed to level the playing field in order to survive with the least effort possible.

LADIMAS: Posted: February 27, 2013 12:23 p.m.

I thought that President Obama was not a socialist !!
I thought he was a Marxist, not a citizen of the United States and a Muslim!!

I do know that he is a good orator, a pretty good comedian, his timing is
good as far as the other comedians say, he is good basketball player,
and recently a good golfer !!

These accomplishments should carry him through in his next four years
as President!!

What the heck, what more does he need to run the country ??

He has the GOP to run (ruin) the country for us Americans !!

CaptGene: Posted: February 27, 2013 12:36 p.m.

More deep analysis from LADIMAS. You're a pretty good comedian yourself!

LADIMAS: Posted: February 27, 2013 1:23 p.m.

CapeGene, you should read my other deep analysis to the other newspapers ?

I've gotten some great feed backs, and they do consider me a good comedian !!

CaptGene: Posted: February 27, 2013 2:21 p.m.

I always laugh when I read your posts.

The LTE just begs for this . . . so here it is again:
Since it’s quite popular to constantly criticize any government program for having its asserted roots in the conservative ideology position put forth as socialism, I’m going to paste this explanation every time I see the ‘quick quip’ that distorts the definition of socialism for political gain.

Here’s the definition:

Socialism: a theory or system of social organization that advocates the vesting of the ownership and control of the means of production and distribution, of capital, land, etc., in the community as a whole.

No progressive I know of or heard in the last 35 years of my adult life promotes government ‘taking over’ the ownership of the ‘private sector’. This is a distortion.

Additionally, government ‘safety net’ programs (think unemployment insurance) designed to ‘cushion’ the harshness of ‘market fundamentalism’ by providing working people some margin of error in the swings in the economy (thing recessions) actually ‘promote’ more risk in the marketplace by giving workers some leeway in taking new jobs or making their own jobs better.

You’d never know this by the ‘quick quips’ offered up here to support ‘market fundamentalism’.

Likewise, regulating the private sector in a manner that promotes fairness, a level playing field and competition not to mention correcting areas where business ‘abuses’ its trust with its customers, is not advocating the ‘control’ of a business.

We as a society have a voice in the ways business is conducted in our nation. Our legal system is testament that voice. Additionally, since businesses continually try to ‘cheat’ each other for one reason or another, this is but further proof why our courts, based on laws created by society, are even beneficial to the businesses themselves by upholding contractual agreements at taxpayer expense!

In any event, we can’t solve our nation’s problems by simply reciting ‘focus group tested’ slogans that give the reader little knowledge or backstory that doesn’t provide them the intelligence to hold their elected politicians accountable for sound decisions and judgment.

CapeGene, I'm glad I can get a chuckle out of you ??
I'm always sad and tearful when I read your posts !!
Sometimes it is good to have a good cry !!
I would rather laugh than cry, but I won't be able to laugh until one of your posts is upbeat and sensible !!

CaptGene: Posted: February 27, 2013 3:33 p.m.

Another laugh out loud post from LADIMAS!

LADIMAS: Posted: February 27, 2013 8:55 p.m.

CaptGene, you are so intuitive, not, about responding to a post!!
So thought provoking I can't wait to tell my friends about your post !!
Talk about laughing !!

And to reiterate, President Obama is not a Socialist his a Marxist !!
With that said just sit back and take the ride of being a Marxist !!

CaptGene: Posted: February 27, 2013 9:13 p.m.

Gosh LADIMAS, that really hurts, your opinion matters so much to me.

ricketzz: Posted: February 28, 2013 10:49 a.m.

Israel is a Socialist country. Are you going to condemn them?

OldReliable: Posted: February 28, 2013 10:54 a.m.

Wow, David Warburton is an admitted socialist! Who knew? Hah! But yes, Obama is a socialist and if it weren't for our GOP House of Reps he would have us running left as fast and far as possible.

ricketzz: Posted: March 1, 2013 9:38 a.m.

I am a Libertarian Socialist. As long as government is vulnerable to regulatory capture what good is it?

OldReliable: Posted: March 2, 2013 11:39 a.m.

Blam... another socialist out of the closet! Guess what Ricketzzz, we already it.
