Let’s sue ‘em right back

Our city and local school districts should sue Shenkman & Hughes to force the Malibu-based law firm to stop its suits alleging bias in our election process unless they can prove discrimination against minorities.

We seem to forget that Lewis Brathwaite, an African-American, was elected to the William S. Hart Union High School

District board and served as president when our valley’s black population was about 1 percent. He also was appointed to our city’s Planning Commission.

I guess Gloria Mercado-Fortine, who served on the Castaic Union School District board and now on the Hart district board, doesn’t count, either.

Does anyone remember the names Texeira or Diaz, or see the irony in the Saugus Union School District board being threatened with a lawsuit when its board president is named De La Cerda?

Or the city settling the suit filed by Shenkman & Hughes right before the people elected Dante Acosta to the council?

For that matter, our council has appointed a number of minorities to city commissions, a place where people can serve and gain the experience helpful to becoming viable council candidates.

If I may steal a line from one of our recent Latino candidates for the council: “Let’s not marginalize Latinos by denying them the right to be citizens like everyone else.”

I believe the people behind these suits are in it only for the money, and they should be stopped.

Let us face it: If the Latino community wanted to elect a Latino to every elected office in our valley, all they would have to do is get to the polls and vote!

I couldn't agree more, and have said so right here in this forum with my own LTEs.

This all reminds me of Shakespeare: "First, let's kill all the lawyers".

Those carpetbagging fools -- including Rex Parris, the hypocrite lawyer from Lancaster -- should find themselves having to put up some defense of their cynical lawsuit mill, nothing but a cheap exploitative scheme to drum up money for themselves.

BB, ugh...can't stand Rex Parris...he's disgusting.

Yeah, chefgirl, BEYOND disgusting.

Richard G. Polanco, the bills author, is not a lawyer. But the bill did make it easier for lawyers to sue. According to Wikipeadia: "Unlike the Federal Voting Rights Act, the CVRA does not require plaintiffs to demonstrate a specific geographic district where a minority is concentrated enough to establish a majority. This makes it easier for minority voters to sue local governments and eliminate at-large elections."

I love when all these groups make noise because they do not get what they want. All these minorities legal and illegal think they are all entitled. I do not see the Chinese, Russian and other group making these demands. Hey if you do not like the system go back! We did not force you to come here!

My long time friend and colleague Carl Boyer is right on the mark. Added to his list is Paula Oliveras who was elected to the William S. Hart School District in a contest between two "Hispanic" sir named woman about 20 years ago. Paula was victorious in a contest with Gloria Mercado Fortine.

But, of course, our system allowing all the governed to elect all who govern is "broken". And also, "of course" giving up 80% of everyone's right to vote (Including every "minority") "fixes" everything.
