Buying stamps at Staples

Regarding “Unions protest Postal Service outlets at Staples,” Jan. 20 Signal: Staples wants to sell stamps! Horrors!

Imagine what would happen if retailers compete with the government-mandated postal monopoly — I can see it now.

One-stop shopping rather than special trips to the post office; the gas and time savings would be despicable.

Short, fast-moving checkout lines? Never! The interminable queues at the post office afford long-lasting conversations and cover-to-cover reading of War and Peace.

I don’t care if Staples is open 27 hours a week longer than the USPS; I cherish my mad rush to the post office at lunchtime.

By all means, protect the union by demolishing customer convenience; it’s a small sacrifice to the altar of labor’s greed.

Yes, boycott a quality retailer to preserve union perquisites that are illegal for the rest of us. Shun earnest enterprise and embrace Big Brother’s monopoly.

After all, union membership is shriveling like an ice cube in the Mojave, so we are obligated to help the poor devils.

The Postal Union is said to be contemplating selling staples at the post office in retaliation.

I don't get it. Grocery stores and places like Costco have been selling stamps for years. USPS has a problem with a store that wants to provide other postal services to make our lives easier when they themselves are complaining about being overworked so much that they want to cut service back to 5 days a week? Unbelievable.

Wait…you were expecting rational behavior from a union? Increasingly, they only exist where government mandates a monopoly.

Unions fight competition and reform at every opportunity.

I buy stamps at Office Depot by the problems there. I suspect a little hypocrisy on the part of the USPS...which seems to be going the way of the dodo bird

On the rare occasion I need postage, I print it at my desk.
