Kevin Buck: Jesus would be a liberal Democrat

Recently my wife unearthed some old Signal newspapers, one of which contained a letter to the editor I had written. The Signal printed that letter on May 17, 1996.

The first thing that struck me was that I had been bothering the good citizens of Santa Clarita for a long time. The second thing was that the more things change, the more they stay the same.

First, the letter:

What Would Jesus Do

Imagine if Jesus Christ were alive today. How would he view some of the issues that face mortal humans today?

I believe he would oppose abortion, though he might favor some abortions if they were to save a mother’s life.

I do not think he could, in good conscience, support the death penalty. Can any of you picture the Son of God using a hangman’s noose?

I can’t even imagine him using his carpentry skills to build a scaffold. Having once been unjustly accused and put to death himself, it is hard to believe he would support a system that would allow this to happen again. Now think of Jesus giving the Sermon on the Mount, extolling the virtues of semiautomatic weapons. Difficult to picture? "The meek shall inherit the earth."

But it might be easier if they had the firepower to kill 20 or more people with one pull of a trigger.

Would Jesus want a world where everybody was carrying a concealed weapon? Would Jesus own a handgun? Turn the other cheek, indeed. But if you still feel threatened, go ahead and shoot.

If Jesus and his apostles had been armed, maybe the Romans would have thought twice about arresting him. After all, the noblest use of a weapon now seems to be to protect us from an unjust and obtrusive government.

Would Jesus refuse medical treatment and education to children because their skin was a different color or their parents were born on the wrong side of an imaginary line?

His mother had to give birth in a barn because of discrimination. In 2000 years, have we learned nothing?

How would he feel about the homeless and the poor? Refuse to help them because they cannot help themselves, or keep trying until we find solutions to raise their lives to a humane and just level?

Would Jesus see it as a waste of taxes to give single mothers a subsistence allowance? Or would he favor giving that money back to the wealthy (or just well-off) and hope it trickles down to the poor?

I believe Jesus would oppose abortion, the death penalty, automatic weapons and an armed populace. This Jesus would be in favor of programs that help the poor, the homeless and children of all races and nationalities.

Jesus would expect people to use their wealth and good fortune to help those less fortunate.

Today, Jesus would be a liberal Democrat. After all, we already know how he feels about early Republicans. He threw them out of the temple for defiling his Father’s house with their greed and money.

Christians who favor the right-wing agenda are hypocrites in the same vein as Pharisees. The Pharisees had Jesus put to death for purely political reasons. His philosophy of love and accommodation drew a following that threatened their power base.

The secular goals of the majority of citizens of the United States threaten the religious right, who favor biblical laws and strive to make them the law of the United States.

Our Founding Fathers were correct. Church and state should be kept separate.

Rereading this letter, I still believe modern Jesus would be a Democrat. There is zero chance Jesus, a bleeding-heart advocate for the poor, who eschewed violence and preached peace, love and equality, could win a primary in today’s Republican Party.

Good luck getting that message approved and amplified by Limbaugh, Beck, Hannity and the other professional dividers of the Right.

In 2013, both Republicans and Democrats feel as if something has gone seriously off the rails, but 17 years ago we were still debating the same issues that face us today.

The political battle still rages. I’m not sure what that says about our government except that it has fought itself to a standstill, even while its citizens suffer.

Checks and balances, indeed.

Another goofball opinion piece from the left wing. Hey Kevin, try reading the Bible and then talk to us about the Wrath of God as it pertains to the death penalty. Just an FYI: there is no modern Jesus and there is no ancient Jesus.... it's simply Jesus for all time.

therightstuff: Posted: March 19, 2013 11:12 a.m.

Good God...we know how much Democratic Voices HATES Republicans but Mr. Buck suggests that Jesus hates Republicans, too! This kind of toxic and divisive rhetoric is not only deceitful, it is biblically and historically inaccurate.

"""There is zero chance Jesus, a bleeding-heart advocate for the poor, who eschewed violence and preached peace, love and equality, could win a primary in today’s Republican Party."""

There's zero chance John F. Kennedy who was pro-life, lowered taxes, believed in a strong military and often invoked the name of God could win a primary in today's DEMOCRATIC PARTY! This sorry group doesn't even want the name "God" in their party platform.

"""we already know how he (Jesus) feels about early Republicans. He threw them out of the temple for defiling his Father’s house with their greed and money."""

During the various religious feasts in which thousands of Jews traveled to Jerusalem, authorities allowed money-changers inside the outer court of the temple. People had to exchange foreign money for money acceptable to religious leaders. These temple-sanctioned businesspeople were inside a place of worship which is why Jesus objected. This same man that Mr. Buck described as someone "who eschewed violence and preached peace, love and equality" drove them out with whips! According to Mr. Buck's sick commentary - these were Republicans. But wait, it gets even worse.

"""Christians who favor the right-wing agenda are hypocrites in the same vein as Pharisees. The Pharisees had Jesus put to death for purely political reasons."""

Translation - if you disagree with Mr. Buck's world-view as a liberal Democrat, you're no better than the people who murdered Jesus!

For Jesus to be a liberal Democrat, he'd have to favor that God's name be removed from his party's platform.

Jesus would have to believe that God had nothing to do with life and support abortion on demand.

When Jesus said 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, (Matthew 19:5) he was really lying. He's for gay marriage regardless how it is not supported in all of scripture. As a liberal Democrat, he would put his party platform over the Bible.

As a liberal Democrat, Jesus would not talk about the kingdom of God, he would advocate that Rome would take care of everyone's needs. Just give unto Caesar what is Caesar's and forget about God.

Jesus was neither a liberal Democrat or a conservative Republican. As he often said, "His kingdom was not of this world." For Mr. Buck or anyone else to try to degrade Jesus Christ as a liberal Democrat is certifiably insane.

oh goodie- a fun "what if" game.

Jesus would be a Libertarian, of course. Didn't he start a radical anti- establishment r3VOlution?

Definition of a Christian Libertarian: generally aligned with the core moral beliefs of Christian conservatives but emphasizes free will to the extent that they are considered socially liberal.

Individuals become Christians voluntarily by accepting Jesus as their Lord and Savior. Jesus' did not to force us to stop sinning, but to show us the way to a right relationship with God. This reconciliation comes as a result of individual choice. Individual choice.

The core of Libertarianism is non-aggression. Yeah- He'd be a libertarian :)

All this trip down memory lane proves is that Buck has ALWAYS been a moron.

LADIMAS: Posted: March 19, 2013 12:36 p.m.

Your right Mr. Buck, Jesus would be a Liberal Democrat today !!
And a good Jewish one at that !! AMEN to that, and Thank GOD for that !!

chico: Posted: March 19, 2013 12:53 p.m.

If Jesus were a liberal democrat, we would see him practically everywhere in America today where liberal democrats arrange things.

He would be at our schools passing out condoms, at clinics funding abortions, and at the bank paying you to be idle.

And Jesus would be in Detroit.

In the end, I believe the liberal democrat idea for legalized same sex marriage will be the ultimate going away party for Jesus.
Christians in America will be told to keep their thoughts on morality to themselves.

Liberal Democrats want us to put Jesus in the closet so that sin can be brought out.

Instead what's wrong with keeping sin in the closet when most other people really dont care what you do?

Keep sin where it belongs and Jesus where He belongs.

Can you imagine Jesus promoting liberal democrat policies that place himself in the closet? --edited.

philellis: Posted: March 19, 2013 1:14 p.m.

How many liberal democrats oppose abortion. I hear Republicans that oppose abortion be referred to as anti-woman's rights. I think that Kevin was napping while doing his analysis for this article.

Dumbounded: Posted: March 19, 2013 1:30 p.m.

"The first thing that struck me was that I had been bothering the good citizens of Santa Clarita for a long time."

Only intelligent sentence in the whole column.

And 4eye, well said. Playing "what if" is a game for fools but if I had to guess Jesus would be a libertarian.

therightstuff: Posted: March 19, 2013 1:40 p.m.

"""For Mr. Buck or anyone else to try to degrade Jesus Christ as a liberal Democrat is certifiably insane."""

Ladimas: "Your right Mr. Buck, Jesus would be a Liberal Democrat today !!"

My point exactly.

LADIMAS: Posted: March 19, 2013 2:40 p.m.

TRS you left out Jewish in your post about Jesus being a Liberal Democrat!!!!

That was sinful !!!!!!!

invisiblesalmon: Posted: March 19, 2013 2:42 p.m.

"In the end, I believe the liberal democrat idea for legalized same sex marriage will be the ultimate going away party for Jesus.

No, you have the right to think and say whatever you want. You don't get to control what rights people have just because you don't agree with them.

Indy: Posted: March 19, 2013 2:43 p.m.

Therightstuff,

I agree that politicizing Jesus is a nonstarter . . . it only throws gas on the partisan fires that already are burning out of control and hindering any resolution to our common problems.

Likewise, democrats have done little to really address the economic issues we’ve been discussing in the other thread by Steve.

And to be ‘fair and balanced’, with the budget discussion up in the air, to be reflecting on a past column isn’t any more timely or relevant that Lunetta talking about ‘cats and dogs’.

I’m going to introduce some of the budget items in this thread as well so we can actually discuss things that are in play ‘today’ and will affect us long into the future . . .

What is worse TRS is how people are so married to their political party. The real irony is that liberals are the most godless segment of our population, and I don't mean that as an insult, and yet people like Buck and Ladimas are such partisans that they feel the need to have Jesus on their team. Are you people so mentally feeble that you can't understand that Jesus would NOT want to be on YOUR team? I think he would want to be on the team of EVERYONE! I find the whole process disgusting but not as disgusting as the idiotic leaders of our country from both parties. Most of you are too stupid to realize that they really don't care about us. They care about one thing and one thing only and the evidence is overwhelming. There are a few decent politicians and I can name a few from both parties, but the rest are corrupt and they laugh at us debating politics like it's a football game. My team won, na na na na.... Oh yea, wait till next year my team will come back and win! Oh yea, my dad can beat up your dad!

therightstuff: Posted: March 19, 2013 3:28 p.m.

A Republican and Democrat were arguing whose side God was on. The Democrat bet the Republican $5 that he couldn't even recite the Lord's Prayer. He took the bet, closed his eyes, and began to pray..."Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep, if I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take." The Democrat's jaw dropped in shock and he said, "I didn't think you could do it! Here's your $5."

I love that story.

emheilbrun: Posted: March 19, 2013 3:51 p.m.

trs: I'll be using that.

Can't miss the irony in a Democrat trying to make a case that Jesus would embrace his party. Just as Peter denied Jesus 3 times; so did the Democrats deny God 3 times at their convention last year. It's just that on the 3rd time Villaraigosa had enough political acumen to ignore the third vote. (And even at that God was given no more than a cameo role at best).

Dumbounded wrote: What is worse TRS is how people are so married to their political party. The real irony is that liberals are the most godless segment of our population, and I don't mean that as an insult . . .

Indy: I agree about people blindly following their respective political parties . . . one reason politicians todays just recite their respective ‘focus group tested’ slogans to each respective base.

Thus, we’re left trying to solve financial problems using folklore and ideology.

With respect to the ‘godless segment of our population’, what exactly do you mean since that word ‘godless’ has usually meant as an insult that degrades people who don’t believe in a supernatural being . . .

philellis: Posted: March 19, 2013 4:21 p.m.

Atheism - no God; godless - No God. WIndy, there is no shame in atheism unless it is self shame.

Dumbounded: Posted: March 19, 2013 5:07 p.m.

Windy, I meant it as is it's definition.

Definition of GODLESS: not acknowledging a deity or divine law

Come on Windy, you know if I'm going to insult someone I wont be too subtle about it. :)

CaptGene: Posted: March 19, 2013 5:51 p.m.

I always get a kick out of the people that want God left out of any policy decisions telling what God's position on policy would be. It really is laugh out loud funny!

hopeful: Posted: March 19, 2013 6:04 p.m.

TRS - Best laugh of the day...thanks for lightening up the moment!

Indy: Posted: March 19, 2013 6:57 p.m.

Therightstuff,

Gee, the version of the prayer I saw in the late 60s in Hot Rod Magazine read:

“Now I lay by rod to sleep, I pray the Lord my rod to keep. And if it should roll before I wake, I pray to the Lord to pull the brake.”

LADIMAS: Posted: March 20, 2013 1:19 a.m.

I quote Indy his post to DUMB about GODLESS:
"With respect to the ‘godless segment of our population’, what exactly do you mean DUMB since that word ‘godless’ has usually meant as an insult that degrades people who don’t believe in a supernatural being"

Indy get used to DUMBS posts they are insulting and degrading to other people!

ricketzz: Posted: March 20, 2013 9:19 a.m.

Small "L" liberal perhaps, definitely not a big "D" Democrat. Republicans are the party of the wealthy and we all know you can't be rich and be a Christian (eye of the needle and all that). Yer money or yer life!

OldReliable: Posted: March 20, 2013 10:49 a.m.

Several years ago as Master of Ceremonies over a rather large event, I invited a known liberal/history professor to the podium to lead us with "The Pledge of Allegiance". That poor soul was absolutely lost and had no idea where to begin. It was pathetic, but a point was made...

Dumbounded: Posted: March 20, 2013 10:53 a.m.

Still having a hard time with those "right lane must turn right" signs Lois? What's insulting is that you're allowed to drive while being unable to comprehend such a simple concept.

Indy: Posted: March 20, 2013 11:34 a.m.

Let’s get back to the actual ‘real world’ politics.

As we see in the new House Budget, Ryan is proposing again, to repeal the Affordable Care Act.

This would destroy the new insurance exchanges that allow Americans to participate in insurance ‘pools’ that reduce premiums.

It would also repeal the requirement regarding ‘preexisting conditions’. Have one under Ryan, well; you wondered what a ‘death panel’ approach looks like . . . there you go . . .

And it should come as no surprise that the repeal would get rid of the birth control requirement that the Catholic Church feels is empowered to enforce their beliefs through the work force.

I can understand Ryan’s motivation to reduce taxes on those paying the most in the higher incomes since indeed they are targeted for any tax increases disproportionately since they disproportionately earn the most income as we’ve even seen here in the CA.

Now Ryan wants you to ignore the benefits of the ACA (http://www.healthcare.gov/law/index.html ) since it leads to a ‘balanced budget’ which for me is a good goal but as we see here, Ryan is reluctant to fully disclose the consequences.

Finally, check you pay stub to see how much you’re paying percentage wise on Medicare . . . they don’t talk about that either . . .

ricketzz: Posted: March 21, 2013 9:45 a.m.

The question is whether government is supposed to serve the People or help a Tyranny oppress. Religion, The Military, Banks, Markets and Manufacturers all want to enslave common people; government (theoretically) is the only thing that gives us a fighting chance. Jesus=Government

Indy: Posted: March 21, 2013 5:15 p.m.

House approved the Paul Ryan budget today . . . 'as is'.

Republicans using their gerrymandered advantage in congressional seats since in states where they have congressional majorities, they lose total state’s popular votes.

For those wondering what gerrymandering is, that’s where a state legislature controlled by the majority party (yes, the dems do this as well . . . ) reconfigure their voting districts to map the concentration of ‘mindless party line voters’ to insure ‘safe seats’.

This has resulted in many districts having hard line partisan ideologues that are not open to compromise . . . witness that the House has repealed Obamacare over 30 times . . .

In any event, there’s a reason why the Voter ID and long lines for voters are in play … maintain power at any cost, even that of democracy . . . who knew . . .

ricketzz: Posted: March 23, 2013 10:04 a.m.

It should be noted that California is fighting Gerrymandering by using a theoretically agnostic commission to draw district boundaries.

People who sarcastically carve up the boundaries are also carving up what's left of our democratic republic. They have made cynics of an entire generation. The radicals win when the People stay home.
