Steve Lunetta: Dogs have owners, cats have staff?

I’ve never liked cats. I find them to be obnoxious, arrogant, and down-right evil. If you’ve had a bad day at work, a cat’s first response is "good, you are here. Feed me. Now."

A dog, on the other hand, cares about you and does his utmost to please you. Come home from a bad day and the dog says "oh, boy! You are home! Let’s play! Let me give you a kiss! I love you!"

It is very true that a dog is man’s best friend.

I must admit, recent events are starting to change my mind, however. We recently acquired a 4-week-old orange fluff ball off CraigsList. The person who had the kittens said that the mother had abandoned them.

By the looks of the kitten, I would say she was right.

The little guy was nothing but skin and bones. He was so emaciated that he could barely communicate his hunger. His eyes were dull and sad.

When we got him home, my wife made up her special mixture of artificial kitten milk, soaked kitten kibble, and baby rice. The little youngster dug right in. Food was flying everywhere.

After a week, he now had a belly again and a spring in his step. Also, much to my chagrin, he has wormed his way into my heart.

Boy, that is hard to say. "I am starting to like cats." The words would have been like vinegar before.

Almost like saying "Jerry Brown is a good governor and a fiscal conservative."

Well, let’s not go that far.

My wife decided to call the little guy Mango since he is a tiger-striped orange tabby. We got into a minor argument over the color of a mango since I asserted that mangos were green. I even went to the store and bought one to show her.

"See, its green!" I was momentarily triumphant. "Cut it open" she ordered. Sure enough, the core was a deep, bright orange that mocked me from the kitchen counter where I had cut it. "Mango it is" I sheepishly surrendered.

Mango has been a very odd experience for me. Trish was not around the house for a couple days this week so I had to take him to work. Odd as that sounds, our company allows and even encourages staff to bring pets to work.

This forced Mango upon me all through the day and into the evening. I had to feed him, get him to go potty, and clean up his messes. And, of course, play with him and allow him to curl up in my lap for much-needed naps.

This process has now changed my mind about cats. Or, more exactly, about this one cat. I look forward to seeing him and playing with the little bugger.

I am very happy that we found him on Craig’s List.

The odd thing about it was that it took so long to find him. In the past, we’ve picked up a cat at a pet store for 10 bucks or from a kid in front of a grocery store for free.

Today, you rarely see the kitten-give-away. In fact, its rather difficult to find kittens at all.

We had gone to a couple of the big pet stores when rescue organizations are doing adoption days. But, these people want about $120 for kittens that are not very young. $120!

I have very mixed feelings about rescues. I know they love animals and prevent many needless deaths but there are some strange things as well.

One rescue presented us with a two-page single-spaced "adoption application" that had to be filled out before we could be considered.

One pleasant rescue lady asked us if we intended our new pet to be an indoor or outdoor pet. When we told her that we live in the country and the cat would hunt outside (killing varmints) and also living inside, her face darkened as she told us "cats should not be outside. We don’t allow our cats to go to homes like that."

Really? Ever looked at a cat? They have claws. And teeth. Eyes set forward like most predators.

Cats are killers and God intended them to be that way.

Mankind benefits from this because rodent populations are controlled.

Our little Mango will never be declawed. He will be a dangerous hunter and kill many rats and mice. He will also curl up in our laps and purr for hours on end.

He will also be loved by this former cat hater.

Steve Lunetta is a resident of Santa Clarita and has Mango sitting in his lap right now. He can be reached at slunetta63@yahoo.com.

This opinion column is the "Cat's MEOW"

Interesting with CPAC and all, that Steve would have chosen a more interesting topic . . . including the budgets being proposed in the Senate.

While we see the republicans want to balance the budget (who doesn’t, really . . . ) , their positions to get their as you might expect, start with ‘tax cuts’ for the higher incomes.

I don’t know if Steve reads this site but I’ve noted on several occasions these numbers:

https://www.ftb.ca.gov/aboutFTB/Tax_Statistics/Reports/Personal_Income_Tax/2008_B-3_AGI_with_Accumulated_Percentages.pdf

For 2007:

- the top 1% of income earners take about 25% of all adjusted gross income
- the bottom 50% of all income earners take around 10% of all AGI
- the 4 people out of 1,000 earn $1 million or more

For 1996:

- the top 1% of income earners take about 17% of all AGI
- the bottom 50% of all income earners take around 12.7% of AGI
- 1 person in 1,000 earn $1 million or more

There are more statistics to think about but the trending is that the top 1% gained roughly 47% more income while the bottom 50% lost 21%.

Cutting tax rates for higher income earners will only further concentrate income and create more needs for government programs!

If the greatest share of the income is going to fewer people, the rest of the income earners are not able to live the ‘American Lifestyle’ of say owning cats and dogs ($120 cats). Simply can’t avoid that type of luxury nor can they afford things like health care.

In any event, the republican plan is cut the tax rate for individuals to a maximum of 25%.

That I guess will help the ‘wealth creators’ (think people like Romney that off shore American jobs to profit from the ‘wage differential’ in nations like China that pay $1/hr) create more individual wealth but the rest of Americans will earn less.

It’s sad that the republican party seems hell bent to pit the ‘workers’ to those left unemployed.

At present, there are more workers so it’s easier to pander to them as well as knowing they don’t know the income percentages since their ‘leaders’ keep that to themselves and their respective lobbyist.

I love cats. Especially the white meat.

Dumbounded: Posted: March 18, 2013 2:15 p.m.

Good lord Windy, give it a rest! You do realize that there is absolutely nobody on this planet reading your endless and repetitive drivel right? However, I did note "Butt_clean" on your Mckeon link. I'm sure that will be just as "Indy" as you are.

Steve, good column. I too hate cats other than the several I've owned throughout my life.

Indy: Understandably, conservatives that want to recite their party’s talking points won’t be interested in my writings . . . great, don’t read them. Why get worked up?

For the other ‘guest readers’ that might want to ‘think’ about your party’s positions, well, that’s why we have debating boards.

I was personally disappointed with all the ruckus about CPAC, that Steve just ‘mellows out’ and writes a column that have no political interest . . .

In any event, I’ve got the list of items from the LA Times article on the budget and will go through them here starting with the tax rate issue.

And I suggest that everyone visit McKeon’s lobbyist page and see who’s funding him . . .

Steve, great column. My dad HATED cats and I always wanted one, in fact begged for one when I was young. Eventually, I concocted a scheme with a girlfriend, who bought me a cat from the pound for my bday, and so I argued with my dad that I couldn't be forced to return a bday gift. In weeks, he was smitten with that kitten. Soon, he was buying beef liver at the market and feeding her treats, it was unbelievable! In any case, I agree with you about the rescues, their mission is good, but sometimes their common sense is clouded by strange quirks. I tried to adopt a dog from boxer rescue years ago and when the crazy lady who ran the place asked where the dog would sleep, I told her I had a nice covered patio out back and I intended to put a nice dog bed or dog house out there for him/her. She freaked! She said they only adopt out pets to homes that guarantee the pet will be indoors! I couldn't believe this lady would rather have an animal in a kennel or foster home or wherever, than in a warm loving forever home, because it wouldn't ALWAYS be indoors. I'd have the dog inside daily and often, but not 24/7. Her point of view was just so strange to me, like she was missing the big picture.

Perhaps, but at least Chefgirl's comments were on topic. She wasn't trolling.

Ladi, talk about windy...you're so full of hot air, you could charge for balloon rides.

Request for Signal Editors:

Can you get a regular conservative columnist that address topical issues facing our politics.

Steve’s discussion about cats is like McKeon’s column a few years back about ‘wilderness trails’.

We need people to be addressing the consequences of the political positions being put forth as ‘answers’ to our common problems.

Right now, the nation’s budget is being debated and we get a column about ‘dogs and cats’.

Does that really belong in the columnist section?

How about a ‘special interest’ area in the Connect section . . .

I’m tired of our future’s being decided in the ‘backrooms’ of our congress where we’re just ‘told’ how it’s going to be . . .

We need intelligent debate and not more ‘infotainment’ that solves nothing.

Considering what’s at stake, again, can you get a conservative columnist that addresses what’s going on with politics ‘this week’ . . . or possibly set up a new version of Tell It to the Signal where we can create topics?

These forums might be our last chance to get constructive change . . . and while some of the posters complain if you write more than a sentence or quick quip, our solutions can’t be solved with ‘talking points’ or ideology/folklore recitals.

A lot of folks here want to be told how to think and how to vote. How’s that working out . . .

therightstuff: Posted: March 18, 2013 9:02 p.m.

"""Signal Editors: Can you get a regular conservative columnist that address topical issues facing our politics?"""

And while you're at it, could you find someone at Democratic Voices that can talk about something other than how much they hate Republicans?

Indy: Posted: March 18, 2013 10:06 p.m.

Therightstuff wrote: And while you're at it, could you find someone at Democratic Voices that can talk about something other than how much they hate Republicans?

Indy: couldn’t agree with you more . . .

I think the sad reality is that the media likes the ‘battle’ if you will between ‘opposing sides’ that I guess feeds the ‘entertainment’ needs of the public like cheering at some football game.

One of the editors a decade ago or longer, I don’t remember, I broached this topic and that person just responded that selling more newspapers with conflict was the goal.

And I suggested that maybe the circulation may increase of the paper actually ‘solved problems’ that actually addressed the readers concerns . . .

But no luck …

In any event, if we don’t ‘see’ and understand the budgetary issues, we’re left with our current group of leaders making ‘deals’ that seem palatable to the public most of whom doesn’t understand the facts of the matter.

And we all lose, regardless of party . . .

I really have appreciated our recent discussions where we try to introduce actual ‘data’ into the discussion!

But that’s seems foreign to the media.

With so much at stake, you’d think the public would ‘demand’ more of their leaders to actually tell them ‘why’ they are overspending for example.

What is it that we can’t afford? And why . . .

That would permit the public to adjust their actions . . . but would introduce the scary world of ‘limits’ that exist in the world of economic scarcity . . . that as I noted, violates ‘American folklore’ and thus it’s a ‘non-starter’.

How much more of the insanity has to occur with crisis after crisis is just sad considering that addressing the cost of our demands consistent with affordability of same just requires ‘disclosure’ . . .

From my take of things, I don’t see most politicians has having any of the business or economic acumen to really address our budgeting nor the media having any content expertise to know when they are just being ‘fed’ my infamous ‘focus group tested’ solutions that are made to sound good but don’t solve our problems.

Anyway, that’s why I ‘go with numbers’ and try to see reality form that perspective versus the folklore/ideology worldview that ignores reality.

"Your point of view was just so strange to me as was your post!!"

I laughed so much at your post I did swallow a lot of air trying to catch
my breath !! Thanks for the good laugh !!

Talk about a "crazy lady" in your post !!

Keep the cat indoors, except when the sun is visible. Otherwise he will meet a predator up the food chain.

Dumbounded: Posted: March 19, 2013 1:25 p.m.

Dear Signal,

Can you give your business to Windy so he can get everything that he wants without regard to anyone else? You know, the way liberals do it in the real world!

Also, can you PLEASE print another letter from Ladi? It's been a couple days and I'm just dying to see the next example of brilliance from her.

And finally, does anyone have any good cat recipes?
