Steve Lunetta: Dirty deeds done for dirt cheap

One of the strangest songs ever written by the Young brothers and Bonn Scott was a little ditty that talked about a gentleman who was willing to do anything for a small fee.

Nothing was beyond his realm of action — murder, revenge, infidelity, you name it. Of course, the mode of retribution was also variable including dynamite, high voltage, hangings and concrete shoes.

A rather frightening image emerges of someone who is willing to do anything without regard to morals or values. A similar image is beginning to appear of our president.

The White House recently revealed a policy that they will use armed unmanned drones to kill individuals on American soil who are deemed to be terrorists.

You read that correctly. Barack Obama can order the murder of any individual on U.S. soil that has been classified as a threat to national security. My hands are shaking as I write this.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) was so concerned about this outrage that he recently completed a courageous 13 hour filibuster. The act held up the confirmation of an Administration appointment to the Central Intelligence Agency and was intended to send a message to the White House.

It sure did. And, in ways that I don’t think even Paul anticipated.

Both Republicans and Democrats supported him. Republican colleagues spelled Paul to allow him rest without yielding the floor. Democrats stood next to him while he spoke. Members of the House from both parties came over to stand with him as the filibuster continued.

Senators and representatives began to demand more transparency from the administration on this policy of domestic murder. Our own Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) said “I believe the administration is really going to have to come to terms with this.”

Further, the Examiner reported that Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) would “join the filibuster, making it a bipartisan effort.” Wyden later did assist Paul in the protest and capped a remarkable day in Washington politics.

It takes a really bad politician or policy to cause Republicans and Democrats to band together. Of course, some fools in the Republican Party derided Paul for his efforts.

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said, “If Mr. Paul wants to be taken seriously, he needs to do more than pull political stunts that fire up impressionable libertarian kids in their college dorms. He needs to know what he’s talking about.”

John, this is why you are not president today. You make bad decisions and cannot clearly see right and wrong.

The administration claims that the War on Terror is on-going and entitles them to carry out the war anytime and anywhere. Does this include American soil? Apparently so, even though Attorney General Eric Holder is back-peddling desperately.

Holder now claims that while it would be technically legal to kill someone on American soil, the president would never do that.

Say what? You mean to tell me that the president could order my death without arrest, legal defense, due process, and trial? He could legally commit murder without the Constitution being breached?

This is stunning. Please, one of our liberal readers, please cite the section of the Constitution that says the president can commit murder with impunity? I’m no legal scholar but I don’t think it’s there. And don’t even try to convince me that its an implied power.

I don’t know much about Rand Paul but I applaud him for his honesty and bravery. RNC Chairman Reince Priebus tweeted last Weds: “Attention all Republican US Senators -> Please go to the floor and help out Rand Paul.”

Paul is gaining bipartisan support in his quest against this despicable Obama policy. If you get a moment, please share a message of support on his website, http://www.paul.senate.gov/. At least someone is looking out for us in Washington.

I am glad to see Mr. Lunetta come around. Hopefully he also agrees with Senator Paul that the global war machine is a good place to cut spending.

Manq: Posted: March 14, 2013 11:31 a.m.

If Rand was working on garnering my vote for his future run for the presidency, he just got one step closer.

Liberty is not partisan.

LADIMAS: Posted: March 14, 2013 2:01 p.m.

Not to discount that 'the White House recently revealed a policy that they will use armed unmanned drones to kill individuals on American soil who are deemed to be TERROSIST!!"

But here is some very pertinent news that just broke today !!

"The search is all but over for a subatomic particle that is a crucial building block of the universe."

"Physicists announced Thursday they believe they have discovered the subatomic particle predicted nearly a half-century ago, which will go a long way toward explaining what gives electrons and all matter in the universe size and shape."

Now this is a deed done that was not done cheap !!!!

Manq: Posted: March 14, 2013 2:09 p.m.

I have no idea what you just said, Ladimas. And if I don't understand it, probably no one does.

Indy: Posted: March 14, 2013 2:25 p.m.

Manq,

I agree that Rand was spot on this issue but his view of economics based on market fundamentalism disqualifies him at least for me to hold public office.

In any event, nothing wrong with an actual filibuster that explains things to the American people.

The democrats could learn from this example.

Manq: Posted: March 14, 2013 2:48 p.m.

"""I agree that Rand was spot on this issue but his view of economics based on market fundamentalism disqualifies him at least for me to hold public office. """

I have lots of issues with Rand myself, Indy.

But unquestionable moral authority on things like NOT randomly killing foreigners TRUMPS about everything else I have in my book. My heart bleeds for the Middle East. Really. I can;t stand to read the news coming out of there anymore. Too much daily heartache, kids dying walking to school from our own drone bombs, then half hour later when people come to help we drop another bomb on them. It's nothing but Murder. With a 2% success ratio. That means for every hundred people killed, only two of them were intended targets. I HATE our secret CIA policy which is causing all this.

Manq: Posted: March 14, 2013 2:49 p.m.

"""The democrats could learn from this example. """

EVERYONE could learn from his example. If we don't stand for something we will fall for anything.

4eyedsue: Posted: March 14, 2013 7:46 p.m.

Mitt Romney as president would not have changed anything in regards to the drones- domestic and abroad. There were other Presidential candidates speaking out against drones last year- but nobody got to hear them. Neither Jill Stein (green party) nor Governor Gary Johnson (libertarian party) were able to participate in the televised Presidential Debates. Had they been able to speak to a wider audience, maybe they could have saved Rand a 13 hour filibuster.

I don't expect we will ever get the chance to vote for Rand. He will stay with the GOP and, if he runs in 2016, he won't get through the primaries. --edited.

therightstuff: Posted: March 14, 2013 9:08 p.m.

I'm not so sure 4ES. Republicans have an idiotic formula for choosing their primary winners. They almost always give it to the "guy next in line" i.e. Bob Dole, John McCain, Mitt Romney. Now that they've cleared the board, there is no heir apparent. A lot can happen between now and then.

4eyedsue: Posted: March 14, 2013 9:21 p.m.

and mostly what will happen between now and then is America will forget all about Rand's epic filibuster. We have very short attention spans.

the GOP will treat Rand the same way they treated his father- as a threat rather than an asset.

They need a new golden boy- or better yet a female... but I can't figure who that is gonna be yet.

stevehw: Posted: March 15, 2013 12:05 a.m.

You're surprised by this? Really?

Remember the Authorization for the Use of Military Force? The one which the previous administration used to justify suspending habeas corpus, warrantless wiretaps, torture, etc.?

This is just the logical extension of that, isn't it?

And do you think that if a republican is elected in 2016 they'll back down from this, or relinquish this power of their own accord?

Sometimes the slope truly is slippery, isn't it?

(BTW, here's Holder's letter to Paul on the use of drones on American soil:

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/interactive/2013/03/07/letter-from-holder-to-sen-paul-on-drone-authority/

I think this statement

"The White House recently revealed a policy that they will use armed unmanned drones to kill individuals on American soil who are deemed to be terrorists."

is a little over the top...unless someone can point to a source for this statement?)

stevehw: Posted: March 15, 2013 12:09 a.m.

http://rt.com/usa/white-house-admits-it-cant-drone-americans-976/

When Lindsey Graham sounds like the rational person in the debate, you know the teahadists have truly gone round the bend.

Of course, for a guy like Lunetta who never admitted that Obama is actually a US citizen born in America, we can always expect the usual rabblerousing and appeals to fear and ignorance.

ricketzz: Posted: March 15, 2013 9:16 a.m.

Drones are wildly popular with the chattering (from fear) masses. You will not stop them by quoting from the Constitution. You can only stop them with courage. Good luck.

Dumbounded: Posted: March 15, 2013 12:06 p.m.

I welcome Manq and Ricketzz to stand with us and support someone like Rand Paul. If nothing else, he means what he says and I have no found any deceipt in his words unlike almost EVERY other politician. He's also very anti-bank which should also please you guys.

Nobody is going to get everything they want in a leader, but can we at least have an honest one?

And Ladi, what in the world are you talking about?

Manq: Posted: March 15, 2013 1:24 p.m.

"""I welcome Manq and Ricketzz to stand with us and support someone like Rand Paul."""

Golly! Glad I could join your 'club.'

I liked Rand Paul until he showed his true colors by grovelling at the feet of corporate felons like BP, apologizing for the lack of deference shown by some of his fellow legislators and by the President. He is, like most right-libertarians, "small government" except for the war machine and the Reproduction Police.
