LA sewage to head to Kings County farms

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — When Los Angeles residents flush their toilets, they could soon be helping fertilize crops in Kings County.

KFSN-TV in Fresno reports (http://bit.ly/YOnNib ) by the end of the year human waste will be treated at an LA County facility still being built, and then trucked north. The sewage will be mixed with plant material and wood chips, composted, and eventually applied to some 30,000 acres of farm land.

The first shipment is expected to arrive in October.

Kings County officials approved the plan several years ago with assurances from the state that the sewage would be safe for people and the environment.

In nearby Kern County, officials voted this week to ask the California Supreme Court to uphold a voter-approved ban on the use of sewage sludge from LA.
