FERGUSON, Mo. (AP) — Authorities say the 18-year-old black man who was shot and killed by police in suburban St. Louis was unarmed.

Ferguson Police Chief Thomas Jackson told The Associated Press that the man who was killed did not have a gun. Police have not disclosed his name, but family members say it was 18-year-old Michael Brown.

Jackson said police are in contact with the second person who was involved in the altercation with the officer before the shooting, but that the person has not been arrested or charged.

Jackson said authorities aren't sure if the second person was unarmed.
