LOS ANGELES (AP) — A driver was killed and a passenger was seriously injured after their car crashed into a freeway construction site, causing structural damage and road closures.

Caltrans says Interstate 5 from the Atlantic Boulevard exit north towards Los Angeles could be closed for much of Saturday following the 2 a.m. crash. Several freeway ramps are also shut down.

The California Highway Patrol says several steel beams fell into lanes when the driver of a red Dodge Magnum crashed into temporary supports for a the Interstate 710 overpass, which is being widened. Crews are inspecting the overpass support beams.

CHP Officer Monica Posada says the driver was killed immediately, and the passenger suffered major injuries.

Motorists heading from Orange County toward Los Angeles are urged to use the westbound 91 Freeway instead of the 5.

At 7:40 p.m., all lanes of the I-5 were reopened, Judy Gish of the Los Angeles Department of Transportation said in an email update.
