Not yet using LinkedIn to help you find qualified professionals? You should be.

This is the right time to be an employer looking for high quality candidates for employment. The resources and tools available to employers are better and cheaper than ever before.

Let’s start with LinkedIn . . . When I first set up my LinkedIn account in 2009, I started with 38 first line connections.

Through those 38 connections I was connected to roughly 300,000 individuals including both employers and employees. Fast forward to today and I now have over 400 first line connections.

Like many users I only connect to employers and individuals that I have a professional relationship with and would be comfortable connecting to one another. Through those 400 plus connections, the total connections swell to more than 7 million professionals in the extended network and to more than 3.6 million companies.

Having connections to a quality pool of professionals and employers makes it possible to help clients and businesses a lot more efficiently. Developing your own network can do the same for you.

Here’s an example of using a network to assist job seekers: When there is a job-ready candidate looking for employment, we are able to help make them visible to employers they have targeted for employment that have a need for the professional skills they offer. With minimal effort two individuals that need each other and want to connect can easily do so.

Job seekers who take the time to develop their social networks are able to help themselves speed up their job search. Imagine how much easier it would be to land that first job out of college if you had connected to the classmates you met along the way while preparing for your career. Many of them may already be working at companies you’d like to work for and you would be able to not only support them in their roles but utilize those connections to get your resume into the hands of the internal decisionw makers at their companies.

Due to the breadth and depth of my network, I am able to do the reverse for employers: Recently an Asian biomedical company that is new to the Santa Clarita Valley was referred to us by the Santa Clarita Valley Economic

Development Corporation for assistant in staffing their new office.

In less than a week our team was able to arrange a line-up of pre-screened qualified candidates for their first open position utilizing our network of job seekers both online and active at the Santa Clarita WorkSource.

We provided the biomedical company with a room for interviews, pre-scheduled interview appointments and supplied full staff support. Once the company selected a new Office Manager, we then used our internal network at COC connecting them to the local Small Business Development Center, where they were assigned a professional human resources consultant to assist them in dealing with the legalities of hiring in the U.S.

All of this was provided at no cost to either the job seeker or the employer. Thank you, Social Media.

Look for additional installments to Employer Resources in the months to come.
