The Master’s College women’s basketball will have its own version of March Madness.

The official field for the 2013 NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball National tournament was announced Wednesday and the TMC Mustangs earned a No. 3 seed and a first-round matchup against No. 6 seed Carroll College of Montana on March 13.

This marks the team’s first NAIA tournament appearance since 2008 and the eighth overall.

“I like our chances, to be honest,” said TMC head coach Dan Waldeck. “Defensively we play a way that can bother teams in a national tournament situation.”

It’s also the team’s first time making the tournament under head coach Dan Waldeck.

TMC has never won a national title in women’s basketball, the team made its best run in the tournament in 2006 when it advanced to the NAIA Final Four.

Waldeck was an assistant coach on that team.

“Don’t go as a tourist,” he said he learned from that trip. “Go to do work. We’ll start preparing (today).”

The entire 32-team tournament will be held at the Frankfort Convention Center in Frankfort, Ky. and will run from March 13-19.

Waldeck said to account for his team’s first-round game, which starts at 9 a.m., he’s having his team simulate central time before it leaves for Kentucky on Sunday.

TMC (25-5) finished third in the Golden State Athletic Conference and ended the season with a No. 10 ranking in the NAIA Division I Coaches’ top 25 poll.

Due to a loss in the quarterfinals of the GSAC Tournament, the Mustangs failed to earn an automatic bid to the NAIA Tournament. Instead, TMC had to wait until Wednesday to find out which teams were selected as at-large bids.

Seventeen of the teams made the tournament as automatic bids and 14 were at-large bids. Georgetown College of Kentucky rounds out the field as the tournament’s host school.
