The third annual Foothill Invitational girls volleyball tournament wrapped up on Sunday in the Santa Clarita Valley.

Five local varsity teams participating in the event, which has grown slightly since making its debut in 2012.

There were 22 total teams in 2012, 24 in 2013 and a combined 38 teams when including junior varsity and freshman/sophomore squads.

The tournament is put on by Los Angeles Volleyball Academy, a club that serves players in the SCV, with help from the city of Santa Clarita and the William S. Hart Union School District.

On Sunday, the final of the three-day tournament, Hart finished highest among the locals at fifth place in the 12-team Invitational Division at the Santa Clarita Sports Complex.

Hart defeated Saugus 25-14, 25-22 in the fifth-place game to cap off the day on Sunday.

South Torrance wound up winning the whole thing with a 2-1 defeat of Notre Dame in the final by set scores of 19-25, 25-19, 15-12.

Hart and Saugus finished one and two in their pool, respectively, to open the tournament on Friday and ended up being the only two SCV teams to move on to the gold bracket.

Also playing in the Invitational Division was West Ranch and Canyon, which both made the silver bracket.

West Ranch ended up beating Canyon to earn ninth place in the tournament.

In the less competitive Festival Division, Golden Valley lost to Alemany, St. Paul and El Camino in succession on Friday to end up fourth place in its pool at Saugus High School.

There were 22 total varsity teams participating this year with an additional eight JV and eight frosh/soph teams added.

Most of the teams in the tournament were from the Santa Clarita, Antelope and San Fernando valleys, with one team traveling from Phoenix.

This was the first year the tournament included a JV and frosh/soph tournament.

The two-day JV tourney took place at West Ranch High School and the one-day frosh/soph tourney was held at Golden Valley High.

While Valencia’s varsity team didn’t take part in the event, its frosh/soph team took the crown at Golden Valley.

So far, no SCV varsity team has finished higher than fourth place in the Invitational Division.
