Jake Schwartz slides into home during the Hart 9U Red team's 7-2 win over North Valley in the Mustang-9 League Baseball World Series.

The Hart 9-and-under Red baseball team turned a double play at the start of the game and another at the end to win the Mustang-9 League Baseball World Series 7-2 over the North Valley 9U team.

Hart beat a team from Corpus Christi, Texas 13-0 in the first round and a team from Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico 13-2 in the second round and again in the quarterfinals 6-4 before facing North Valley in the championship game in Walnut on Monday.

Hart took a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning when Jacob Schwartz scored on a wild pitch.

They scored two more in the top of the fourth when Schwartz singled in Shane Overholser and then came in on an Ian Duarte double.

But Hart’s biggest inning came in the fifth when, with two out, TJ Cataldi singled in Greg Pierantoni and Casey Hinojosa. Steph Soghomonian also scored on the play on a throwing error from Granana Hill’s right fielder. Cataldi then came home on a Schwartz single and Hart cruised to the win from there thanks to the pitching of Cataldi and Duarte.

“I’m so proud of these kids and all the hard work they put in,” said manager Jesse Hinojosa. “Every game was a battle. Our pitching dominated, we hit the ball well and we didn’t make very many errors. We worked hard all summer, the kids were committed and it paid off.”

The Mustang 9U team wasn’t the only Hart Pony team to make a championship game.

The Shetland 5U team made it to the World Series championship game where they lost to Whittier 13-5.

The Shetland 6U team lost to Chino Hills Red in the quarterfinal of the World Series 10-2.

In the Pinto age division, Hart’s Pinto 7U team lost to West Covina Red in the World Series quarterfinals and the Pinto 8U team lost to Fountain Valley in the super regional quarterfinals 8-7.

Hart’s Mustang 10U Blue team beat the 10U Red team 6-3 in bracket play of regionals and then lost 12-2 in the super regionals to Menisee Maroon.

In the Bronco division, the 11U team lost 8-0 to Simi Valley in the first round of zone play and the 12U team lost in the sectional semifinals to Ventura Coast 12-0.

Finally, in the Pony age division, Hart’s 13U team lost to Newbury Park A 9-6 in bracket play of the region tournament.
