West Ranch junior Nathan Bultman stands with his CIF State Championship sixth-place medal on Saturday in Clovis.

It won’t go down as a day of outright glory for two local athletes.

But Saturday’s CIF State Track and Field Championships at Buchanan High School in Clovis may have served as a precursor a pair of outstanding athletes of the future.

West Ranch junior Nathan Bultman finished on the podium at sixth place in the shot put final while Saugus’ Brian Zabilski, also a junior, took 12th in the 3,200 state championship race.

The two record-setting athletes were the last Santa Clarita Valley’s last ones standing in the lengthy track and field postseason

Bultman reached 58 feet, 10 1/2 inches on his second of six throws in the event to put himself into the required top-six benchmark needed to receive and All-State medal.

Dotun Ogundeji of Madison High School in San Diego won the state title with a heave of 65-5 1/2.

On his sixth and final thrown, Bultman appeared to make it as far as 64 feet, which could have potentially put him in second place.

But the shot didn’t count as it landed just outside the boundary.

Bultman has previously thrown as far as 62-4, which is the school record in the event.

Zabilski clocked a time of 9 minutes, 4.64 seconds in his race to cap what has been a breakout season for him dating back to a fourth place individual finish at the state Division II cross country final in the fall.

On Saturday, he hung in the middle of a pack of 27 of the fastest runners in the state who were primarily seniors.

All in all, Zabilski was pleased with his performance.

“I feel like expectations are high,” he said. “This race was very tactical so time-wise you can’t do much about it. Place-wise, you can’t complain with 12th. It’s sort of something where that’s the way it went. I’ll be back next year so I definitely plan on doing big things next year.”

The race was won by Fred Huxham from Redwood High in 8:54.24.

Seven of the top nine finishers in the race were seniors, which bodes well for a younger athlete like Zabilski.

“I’m definitely looking to set some new records, not just for Saugus, but for the SCV as a whole,” said Zabilski, who already owns the school record in the 3,200.
