What did Valencia boys soccer achieve in 2014?

It overachieved, according to head coach Tony Scalercio.

And it almost over-overachieved on Tuesday.

The Vikings were penalty kicks away from advancing to the CIF-Southern Section Division IV quarterfinals after going through regulation and two overtimes tied at 0-0 with Artesia High in Lakewood.

But the Suburban League’s third-place team is now the overachieving team in the quarterfinals after winning on penalty kicks 3-1.

“It’s sad because of the seniors graduating, but they did nothing but overachieve,” Scalercio said. “I had high expectations and they lived up to those. They just had a bang-up season.”

Valencia’s best scoring chance came in the first half when Luis Garcia Sosa’s shot hit the post.

There were other chances, but Valencia couldn’t cash in.

It leaned so heavily on goalkeeper Cole Murphy, who turned in a scoreless 100 minutes.

“He played lights out,” Scalercio said. “He honestly played like it was the last game of his soccer career, and turns out this is the last game of his soccer career.”

Murphy will be going to Syracuse to play football in the fall.

Valencia finished the season at 13-5-4.
